Honestly curious. We love our cloth diapers, but I'd love to hear why you chose disposables.

@aprk: lazy!!! I just could not imagine adding to washing diapers and poop to the long laundry (pun intended) list of things to do! It's choose your "battles" so to speak. Because we make all her food but that to me is more important than cloth diapering.

DH nixed it. He said he could deal with them going in the same washer as our towels and clothes. I was really upset but I think we are better off. I find it hard to get just the reagular laundry done now, lol.

@aprk: I almost never feel defensive about using disposables, but after reading your question I kinda do!

I struggle with keeping up with just getting all our clothes washed. There is no way I could add diapers to the mix. Also, DH isn't on board and we also live in two places so it would just be complicated and I want to see ow we are doing with the baby first without adding other complications.

@mrbee: hahahahaha I thought the same thing.
I'm a full time WOHM... I simply don't have time (or desire) to be washing poop and pee out of cloth diapers.

I wasn't interested in doing the work. We were very excited about practicing elimination communication, and that kind of seemed like enough to take on without also cloth diapering.

I'm a full time WOHM with an hour and a half commute in each direction. I struggle get myself clean every day, let alone the laundry. There's no way I could have added diapers to that. I don't even consider it being lazy, I'm busy as hell already.

@aprk: It works very well for us! Using EC, DD was potty trained by 18 months. DS is only 14 months right now, but we hope to have him potty trained by the end of the year (20 months)!

Add me to the lazy crowd! I thought about it briefly and DH was SO against it, too. It wasn't a battle I thought was worth fighting.

Plain laziness. DH had no interest so any extra work would fall on me and I wasn't interested in taking that on.

Dh and I discussed it several times, but it boiled down to not enough time in the day for us. With so much to do i just couldn't imagine diaper laundry on top. I do have some regret about it, but lo has done fine in disposables, so that helps.

I researched and bought a couple of types but it came down to the fact that we don't have a washer/dryer in our apartment. I couldn't see bringing diapers to the laundromat. And we would've had to go to the laundromat even more than we already did or buy a big stash. The diaper services were too expensive for us and didn't make sense in terms of the environment if you factor in gas.
We both WOHM and there's no way in hell I was going to be washing dirty diapers by hand in addition to everything else.
That's not laziness. I don't think people should use that as a reason because I'm sure that you guys aren't lazy! You have a ton of other things to do as a parent and pick and choose what works best for your family. Cloth diapers, no matter how cute they are, aren't for everyone.

@mrsjazz: I wouldn't want to schlep dirty diapers to the laundromat either!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@mrsjazz: Haha I seriously did not want to wash the cloth diapers! And I'm not entirely convinced it's cheaper than disposables. Especially when people start buying all these cute but unnecessary patterns.

@regberadaisy: I think it's cheaper if you get the basic stuff, but of course most people want the pretty and cute stuff. And what if a certain brand doesn't work for your baby? And I checked out G Diapers, what the hell? Those are expensive!

I hate laundry - bottom line. Overall, I kind of feel like cloth diapering is a trend, and I would only be doing it to jump on the bandwagon, not because its a good fit for me or because I feel super strongly about the benefits. Then I would feel like a failure when I suck at it. Not setting myself up for that.

My daycare doesn't accept cloth diapering, and I *hate* doing laundry with the passion of a thousand suns. The thought of washing loads of poopy diapers just doesn't sweeten the deal for me!!

We live in a condo building with shared, coin-operated laundry. Cloth was going to be more expensive once laundry costs were factored in, and we wouldn't be able to be flexible with temps, rinses, etc. Plus, I was worried that if someone complained and we were told not to wash them in the shared machines, I'd be out the upfront cost. I priced a cloth service, but it was once a week pickup, and the idea of 86 dirty diapers in my condo crossed me out. The service cost the same as disposables and would have been prefolds only. Maybe next LO, but I've ended up having a good experience with disposables, and I wouldn't have the cost savings of reusing cloth diapers for more than one kiddo. (Clearly the cost savings were one of the biggest reasons I was willing to take on the extra work of cloth!)

I never considered cloth diapers so I can't even say I made a "choice".
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I never even considered cloth
1) laundry - LO brought on enough extra laundry
2) DH would never go for it
3) not sure day care would have felt about it
4) I don't think the covers are cute. I would want them to match every outfit
5) disposables are so much easier and convient to me

We really wanted to make cloth diapers happen, but alas, we live in an apartment, and without our own machines.
I researched portable, mini spin washers, looked into the rules about cleaning cloth diapers at our complex, and even inquired if either sets of our parents (live nearby) would be open to letting us utilize their machines if we pitched towards the water bill.
In the end, it was a loosing battle. We both work outside of the home, and realized how much of a nightmare it was going to be to keep up. We're definitely going with disposables.

I have no interest in cloth diapering full time. I feel like babies are constantly peeing and don't want to do that much laundry. I can barely keep up with our normal laundry as it is. I don't really consider it laziness, I call it refusing to add one more responsibility to my already full list.
I have a couple cloth diapers that we use around the house occasionally, but I don't like how bulky they are under clothes. I really just prefer disposables.

We live in an apartment with shared laundry. Diaper services a) aren't good environmentally either and b) are expensive and c) seem icky (even though I KNOW it's probably ok.)

Pure convenience. Briefly thought about it, but we had enough struggle with severe colic and I didn't have any help from family, so it was just too much to add one more thing.
pomelo / 5321 posts
With DS, I moved home during DH's deployment and we were living with family. We didn't really have the room for the extra stuff and I didn't want to put them through someone elses washer. I also didn't know much about cloth diapering then so it was an easy decision. This time, DH is not on board. He likes the idea of the overall savings but that's about it. We really can't afford the upfront costs of CDing and I don't think it's worth the stress for me.

Thanks for your answers, everyone! You've helped me to see the the other side.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
I wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone that may babysit him by asking them to CD for us. The startup cost was off putting too. I know they pay for themselves and disposables end up costing more in the long run, but we didn't have the money up front to invest.

DH was against. He has a queasy stomach and didn't think he could handle rinse jobs. Plus our laundry is right outside the nursery and we have a time of use system for hydro costs, so we have to be strategic about timing of loads...it's already tricky getting everything done during the week!
