I don't know if this is true, but I've heard it's automatic reflex to prevent your eyes being jolted out of their sockets by the ferocity of the sneeze:)

@aunt pol: I heard that too! That it's a reflex because of the pressure caused by the sneeze.
I've also heard that it's a reflex to keep the particles that you're about to expel from your eyes.
