I just found out about this on last night's E News.

This article sums up how I feel about this viral "awareness campaign"

@Smurfette: @CupQuakeWalk: I guess I just don't get the point? Is it basically just to raise awareness?

You either accept the challenge or make a donation. Or do both!

I find it really annoying! I think a lot of people do it and don't donate, which defeats the whole purpose IMO (not that it has a purpose to begin with).

@lawbee11: yep. You are supposed to do it or donate money. Most are doing it and donating. It has raised over $5m dollars so far.

It's annoying...but it's also brilliant. The ALS has had $5.5 million when they only raised about $29-39k last year (something like that.)
Though if someone nominates me they are getting cursed out.

You're supposed to donate $10 if you do it and $100 if you don't. I think it's cool if you actually donate.

@JerricaBenton: that's how I understood it. DH just got tagged! I think it's good if it has raised so much money.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Yep, what others have said! Even though it seems kind of pointless and isn't really making people aware of WHAT ALS is, it's doing a fantastic job of getting people to donate!
honeydew / 7586 posts
It was started by a young man with ALS as a means to bring awareness to the condition. It has raised a ton of money this far. I think it's great!

This has just done the rounds in New Zealand and a 40 year old male actually died!

@kemma, well, he had a bottle of liquor right before so....bad combo

DH did the cold water challenge when it was going around. I told him not to but all 3 people who challenged him were texting and FBing him every day pestering him to do it. Of course no one he challenged in it did it.

@Kemma: aw but that article said he drank a liter of bourbon in "a matter of minutes"...doesnt seem like the ice water was what killed him still very sad though.

@Mrs. Lion: @blackbird: definitely a bad combo! Unfortunately it seems to be one of those activities that sounds like a good idea once you've had a few drinks!

Yeah I don't understand this challenge... Most people I see that post about it on FB don't mention donating. Wouldn't it be better to donate the $100?
kiwi / 661 posts
I was a total hater but it is working. I really can't argue with a good cause bringing in millions of dollars for research. I do think it is a little weird the people who dump the ice and don't donate even a little bit, but ALS is still winning!

I think it's great that some people have donated and not great for people who didn't didn't donate.
When I first saw these popping up on my newsfeed I was annoyed because people were doing it and not donating. But I think others have changed the rules to say if you do the bucket challenge, you pay $5 or $10 but if you don't want to do the bucket challenge you pay $100.
I was really surprised to hear that over 4 million in donations have been made in the past couple weeks because of this social media stunt.
I have enjoyed watching celebrities do it and I'm sure they donated.
It does bum me out when I click on my friends video and they don't mention that they donated so it leads me to think they didn't.
I haven't been challenged but if I did, I would donate and do the ice bucket. Also, my blip would talk about ALS more.
ETA: Also, I sorta see the point of ice water because ALS affects the nerves but some of my friends are either dumping water without ice or dumping a few ice cubes in the tub right before pouring on themselves. The water doesn't even get the chance to get cold. It kinda loses the point of ALS awareness.

This one is my favorite.

I like the fact that the celebrities are donating a lot more and doing the challenge as well.

I love the whole thing. Even if only a small percentage of people get educated on ALS and/or donate, it's gotten so huge that that's actually a large amount of people. Plus I'm happy to have something other than the many horrible things happening in the world to read in my newsfeed.

My cousin is a genius. He just did the Italian ice bucket challenge as in eating "all" of the Italian ices in a bucket. Hahaha.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I guess I'm okay with it as long as people A) are donating B) actually bother to read up on what this is. It's just I feel like a lot of people aren't...
nectarine / 2600 posts
So, my husband did it, since he got tagged or whatever. He gave the $10 to ALS (And he didn't even know what ALS was, so he learned about it!) And then he also donated to 3 other charities that hit closer to home for us. And I've been seeing a few others doing something similar as well. I wonder if many organizations are seeing an increase in donations these days?!
honeydew / 7586 posts
@.twist.: We donated money. Steve still wanted to do the challenge but we were out all day yesterday and didn't have time. My plan, if I can pull it off, is to wait until he is in the shower and film myself pouring ice water on his head when he's not expecting it. I'm just not sure how I'm going to juggle the water, B, and filming at the same time.
Also, must figure out how to edit film as to not expose his penis to the world.
I'm pretty much the best wife ever.

@autumnlove: he grew up just a few towns over from me and went to my college, too... same major too...!! Just absolutely heartbreaking to see it in someone so young and active. My friend's mom just passed from it and it is truly a horrible way to die.
