Growing up, everyone loved Princess Di... do you guys think that Kate Middleton will become as iconic and beloved?
Btw, I can't imagine the pressure of being either... marrying into the royal family is no joke!!

I don't really know how popular Princess Di was since I was so young when she was alive...but I'm venturing to say yes.
If anyone else is obsessed with Kate Middleton as I am, I'm thinking she will be equally as iconic.

I definitely think so! She very much seems to be a 'people's princess' just as Diana was.
@highwire: I love her too! I think she always looks flawless but still approachable enough that I'd want to be her friend.

I love Kate, but I don't think she will be able to surpass Diana... seemed like Diana was known for her heart of gold and acts of charity, and while Kate Middleton is classy and loved in her own right, I think she has a ways to go. She might get there in 10 years though!

@Mrs. High Heels: Yeah I mean she's only been princess for less than 2 years!

Princess Diana was very popular and I loved her. I dont think Kate will ever be as big or as iconic as her

@highwire: true!! she's already so mature for her age and has taken on the princess role so well!

@Mrs. High Heels: Wait I guess it is like exactly 2 years! They got married in April!

Yes. Although I think it's generational . . . KM will be the people's princess for this generation grouping, and Diana will *always* be the people's princess for the previous generation grouping (if that makes sense).

I think Princess Diana will always be more iconic because (as upsetting as this is) she died. She is immortalized through her tragic death while she was still so young.
Hopefully Kate lives a nice long life!

@highwire: haha, you really know your kate and william trivia!

@pui: completely agree... also, it was like a fairytale gone wrong with everything that happened with prince charles, and her battles with eating disorders. i think a lot of her struggles made her very human and relateable.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Kate but I don't think she will ever be as iconic as Princess Diana. I just don't think Kate has that passion and spirit about her that Di did.

@mrbee: Of course, but her death also "preserved" her at her wildest, most youthful state, forever. She never faded in to relative obscurity overtime... she was cut off right when she was at her peak.

Yes...even more so, thanks to the internet. Diana didn't have that to fuel her fame like Kate does.

@Mrs. High Heels: I feel like the access we have to them these days because of the internet and social media removes even more mystery and allows us to relate to them more than in previous generations.

@pui: Death may or not be a factor in her current status as an icon, but by the question I meant: do you think that Kate will be as iconic/beloved in her lifetime as Princess Di was in her lifetime?

@mrbee: Oh well in that case, probably not still.
As beautiful and stylish as Kate is, she's no princess Di.
Who knows what she may one day do though?

Yes!!! I was never that into princess Di, though she did die while I was young. I love Kate and she seems to be a sweetheart who genuinely loved to help people. It seems people are comparing her and Di but I think Kate will prove herself to be her own magnificent person apart from Di.
She is iconic to me for sure! I also agree with others that only two years as a princess, she is already so graceful and lovely. Imagine who she could be given 10 years! Amazing (though stressful) position to be in!
Oh, and she is an amazing role model.

I love Kate Middleton, but Princess Di was Princess Di. I don't think there can ever be a comparison.
This is a weird way to make a distinction, but I truly believe Kate fell in love with Will, and married him in spite of him being a royal, not because of. I have the feeling that while she does carry out her royal duties with grace and enthusiasm, she would be just as happy to have a "normal life." On the other hand, Princess Di had more of an arranged marriage, and I think she found true purpose in all the charitable things she was involved in, and in really being "the people's princess." She just had a passion for helping others that is hard to match.

I don't really remember the Princess Di's fever pitch popularity. I do remember her death and realixing for the first time princesses are people too. The die normal, but tragic deaths just like anyone else. I also remember feeling sad for Prince Will and Harry because they lost their mom.
Duchess Kate will soon give birth to the future king or queen. She seems to be in a loving marriage, so her story is already happier. She has a more real rags to royalty story than Princess Di did. She dresses completely well and styles herself, does her own hair and make up- all goid things. If she tackles causes the way Princess Di I imagine she will be even more beloved.

I hope not. Princess Di had such a rough life (because of her notarity and the obsession with her).

I loved/still love Princess Di - I don't think Kate Middleton is at her level yet but I do like her.

No. I agree with @daniellemybelle that Princess Diana found her passion in helping people partly because of her unhappy marriage and her charity work made her iconic. Kate Middleton lounged around for almost ten years with very little "work" being done and lots of vacations being taken. That's great that her family supported her and she didn't have to work to live but I think it shows a lack of dedication and passion for anything.
ETA - I do think she's pretty and dresses well. I know some people think her fashion choices are boring but I think they're mostly appropriate for her position.
