dh and i were talking about how sad it is that we can't imagine letting our LOs play outside after sundown by themselves... or even in general -- without supervision! We don't want to be overly cautious but at the same time (esp as first time parents), see that it is so entirely different now than it was when we were growing up! (even our parents agree!)...

Abductions are about the same as they've always been and I believe crime as a whole is actually down too... we're WAY over-informed these days though so it seems like they're more common. Ie. When we were growing up we didn't know about crime that happened across the country or even the next state... now b/c of things like Amber alerts we're aware of many abductions we'd otherwise have no idea about.
DS started playing outside on his own when he was 7 but he has some strict rules.... 1. No going into anyone's house without telling us AND we have to meet his friends parents before he can go to their house. 2. Check in often 3. Be in when the streetlights come on... primarily b/c he has an early bedtime.
So far it's worked great for us & DS is pretty responsible so I don't worry. =)

Maybe in a fenced backyard by 8 years old. Other than that, no. I'm too paranoid. But I agree that it's sad. I use to spend the whole day away from my parents, in my neighborhood playing with friends.

Not where we live, no. My SIL lives in a very family-oriented, pretty secluded subdivision (with tons of young families), and her girls always play outside unsupervised (they're 7 and 11). The younger one had to stay in the yard up until this past summer, though.
Here, no. I wish I could, because some of my favorite memories growing up were of running around until dark with the neighborhood kids, or even after dark if I was at my cousins', but the thought of doing that where we live now makes me uneasy.

In the back yard, when she is old enough, yes. Then, when she is even older yet, she can slowly start to do more, like go to a friends house down the road, stay out a bit longer etc...

Not where we live - we're in an apartment. Maybe 8 years + he can play in the park behind our apartment building. We live in a family friendly city.
when I was a kid my parents were hardly ever outside with us and we'd play from sun up to sun down!!! crazy!

I think so. We live in a pretty safe area. I see kids playing outside unsupervised all the time.

We always have lots of kids playing in the front yards on our street, so probably when LO is older. But, I'll likely still supervise as much as I can since I'm a worrier.
