Her 1st one will be big, and then they will be smaller gatherings the years after that.

I think so.... Last year's 2nd bday party had to be cancelled because DS was born early, but I always remember having bday parties.... Perhaps not huge (this year will be huge because we are combining DS's first with DD's third), but something more than just family....
Does that count?

I'll try to but honestly, it's too soon to say. I hope I do because I found these awesome Peter Rabbit birthday candle holders that I just -love-.

No. As the kids get older, we'll offer them a choice of either a birthday party or a special family outing. They could choose a day at the zoo or aquarium, a live show, etc... plus choose where to eat and maybe a pick out a special present out. My friends do this with their kids, and they have done some really cool things in lieu of birthday parties.
Having said that, DD is insanely excited for her 3 year old birthday (she made DH pinky swear not to forget the date) so we're going to throw her a party this year. I hope she'll choose a fun outing next year, though!

I plan on throwing my LO a party every year for family and friends. I'm really behind and need to start planning for my LO's 2nd birthday party.

I hope to! Even if its just something small. One family I knew had four kids so every four years each kid would get a big party. So one big party a year. I like that idea! If we have threes kids then each kid would get a great party every three years. Then maybe had just a small scale sleepover on the "off years"

They wont always be huge but yeah, what kid doesn't have some kind of birthday party? I don't always plan on breaking the bank though. There are PLENTY of insanely cheap party ideas out there!

We'll always have some sort of family celebration - I can't imagine not having a cake and singing happy birthday. But I'll only host parties where we invite other kids when LO is in elementary school.

Yes, my mom did for me and I love love love parties! I can't wait to start planning LO's second, I'm always coming up with a theme but I know I have to wait

As long at that's what my kiddo wants. If she ends up being shy and not wanting something big, we'll just keep it to family.

I think from ages 2-5 they will be small parties but when they start school and start having friends, we might do the typical children's birthday parties.
