I think vaccines are the bomb. I get my flu shot every year, as does DH, as will LO.

@Mrs. Pen: do you have a link you could send me about that study? I was reading about vit d earlier today and this CNN post from last year about a publication in the journal of the AMA seems to contradict the idea that vit d can prevent the flu. I'd love to read the evidence showing otherwise.

Yup. My doc felt strongly about it. Plus, I had a winter baby and I wanted her to be protected. She and I will both be getting this year's flu shot next week.

I would have but I am allergic to egg whites so they wouldn't give it to me.

I've never gotten a flu shot, but my midwives said I should get one (around 36 weeks I think?), particularly because I'm due in November (flu season). I'm okay with getting it.

@Orvis18: how severe is your allergy? I have a mild egg white allergy, I react when they test for it and if I eat more than one meringue or have just egg whites than my throat gets sore & itchy, but nothing bad happens so they've let me have the flu shot.

The clinical trial was done at the Jikei School of Medicine in Tokyo and published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2010. http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/early/2010/03/10/ajcn.2009.29094.abstract

H1N1 was in full force and I was working in an ED where I was seeing kids with it every single day. I wore an N95 mask and got my flu shot. Pregnant mamas can end up critically ill if they get the flu.

I always have gotten a flu shot and will get a flu shot before baby girl is born (in early November).

I've never gotten a flu shot and did not while pregnant. My doctor was fine with this.

@sarbear, the flu vaccine is only for the respiratory flu
I *wish* there was a vaccine for the stomach flu, though. I get it every other year without fail and this year I'm "due"....

@blackbird: stomach flu is the worst. When the rotavirus vaccine was added to the infant schedule I asked my doc if it was available for adults and was so disappointed that its not. Not looking forward LO bringing gastro home when she starts at daycare.

my baby was born in january with a flu epidemic going on, so i did get the flu shot. i would have gotten it anyway because i came down with the flu a few years ago and it was awful. just horrible. it isn't a bad cold. it's really horrible. i can't imagine being pregnant and feeling like that.

@Lozza: +1!
I get the flu shot every year. I skipped one year and got the flu. I have never been so sick in all my life.

I get the fly shot every year (I work in an ICU but I would get it anyway). Like @Mrs. Jacks: said, I've seen pregnant women in our unit from the flu. I mostly got it (and asked DH, my parents and my sister to get it and pertussis vaccine) to protect M. She was born in September and obviously too young to be vaccinated.

As far as I know I've never had the flu, but I've gotten the shot every year since college and will definitely get it while pregnant. I also make my H get it and will have my kids get it. I've heard a lot of people say they don't get it because it only protects against a few strains, which seems silly to me. Wouldn't you rather protect yourself from some of the flu strains than none? But I digress....

I did so begrudgingly and got a cold a few days later. I had never gotten the shot before. I've never had the flu.
pomelo / 5720 posts
@mrs. bird: it's actually just a digestive allergy (dx at 25)and I've said that, but no one wants to give it to me. I should ask for the test to see what happens.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
No. I have never gotten the flu shot. I have personally seen too many people sick more than usual because of it.
pomegranate / 3768 posts
yes, i got the flu shot while pregnant. doctor recommended it and said it's important to get it to protect myself and LO, especially since i was due in december. dh got one too.

I never got a flu shot until I was pregnant. My OB urged me to get one, so I did. Now, I get one every year.
kiwi / 612 posts
Yes, I did per my docs recs. It was the first winter season I never got sick, and will be getting a flu shot this year too!
pineapple / 12566 posts
I had never had a flu shot before but my Ob highly recommended it with my first and I got it. I didn't have any side effects. Apparently it is less common here, but I am going to ask for one at my next appointment.

My Dr basically told me what @runsyellowlites: said. He also told me about the risks and then let me make my own decision. I normally do not get the shot and opted not to while pregnant.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
I never got one before (and I've never had the flu *knock on wood*) but I did get one while I was pregnant on my doctor's recommendation. No side effects or issues. I got the thimerosal free shot.
apricot / 274 posts
I work in healthcare so I get one every year. FYI, there is a flu vaccine this year that can be given to people with egg allergies. I can't think of the name of the vaccine, but ask your doctor or pharmacist.
clementine / 943 posts
Yup. Got one while I was pregnant and will get one this year. I trust my doctors advice, and flu is way, way more dangerous to a pregnant woman than any "unproven effects" (PS my kiddo is just fine, no third arm or anything).
pomegranate / 3706 posts
Never got one before TTC my first and my OB made me get one before and then while I was pregnant. I know they say it's not possible to get sick from it, but I did both times. I hoping to avoid it this pregnancy, but so far it hasn't come up. The one I will refuse is the Dtap they want pregnant women to get now. The insert flat out says it is class C and hasn't been tested on pregnant women. No thanks.

I've never had a flu shot and I don't plan on LO getting one either so I didn't do it while I was pregnant. My midwife never even brought it up until I asked and they said it was my choice.
bananas / 9118 posts
Absolutely, I get one every single year, pregnant or not. I just ask for the preservative free one, and it's free at Walgreens with my insurance. We will all be getting ours later this week.
I want to protect my baby as much as I can, and getting the flu can be catastrophic for an unborn baby- not a risk I'm willing to take.
I've always had very minimal side effects, mild achyness in my arm that night, but I've never gotten the flu or a cold after being vaccinated.
