My LO was born in February. For the first three months, she pretty much lived in footed sleepers. I found socks didn't stay on her very well in the beginning. When she got a little older and it warmed up in the spring, I bought her Trumpette socks. No shoes until she was starting to walk.

I personally really liked the pants that had built in booties. I didn't use sleep and plays because lo got too hot in the double swaddle we used, and he was swaddled almost all the time. We put him in long sleeved onesies most of the time, and then put those pants on him when we went out of the house. We used socks when we didn't have a pair of those pants clean, but he didn't have any shoes until he started walking. Lo was born march 1st, so it was only cold here for about a month.

@Mrs. Lion: Oh yes, those built-in booties pants were great. We had a bunch of the Carter's brand ones, and that's what she usually wore when we took her out.

Footed sleepers...we used the socks as mittens for her hands most of the time (if we didn't have her in the long-sleeved onesies that had built in mittens).

R was a March baby so cold but not super cold. We did footed sleepers and pants and socks during the day.

We used footed sleepers mostly, but swear by the Padraig's Cottage booties/slippers when we go out. They are wonderful and one pair lasted the whole winter.

Our December baby was in footed jammies most of the winter, and for outside, we bought fleecy booties from gap that we're nice and cozy.

LO wore footed sleepers or thick socks at home. Socks and knit booties or baby uggs out of the house.

I had my munchkin right around Christmas, and I agree with everyone - he lived in footed sleepers for the first few weeks! However, my MIL made him some fleece shoes that were amazing - they look a lot like these from Etsy:

I cannot rave about them enough - easy to put on, the elastic keeps them in place, and if you get the fleeced lined ones, they keep the feet warm and no need for socks! I still have people stop and ask me all the time where I get his "shoes."

Pretty much the same as everyone has said. She was in footed sleepers, mostly. We also had a couple pairs of socks that would stay on, but I don't know the brand. When we took her out in the infant bucket seat, we also put a blanket over her. She's never had any sort of shoe on yet, at almost 8 months!

my LO was born mid-November. He was mostly in footed fleece sleepers for the first few months, in and out of home. and a big blanket and hat when we went out.

Thanks for all the footed sleeper comments. More looking to find out what's better: socks or booties.

@littlek: We used socks when she wasn't in sleepers (like if she went to daycare). I've never been able to keep a bootie on her feet. If they are small enough, maybe look into Robeez? Those are the only shoes I can keep on LO's feet.

@littlek: we had ones like this http://www.uggaustralia.com/baby/caden/1005198I.html?dwvar_1005198I_color=PPNK#start=7&cgid=baby but light pink. We have an outlet by us so they may have been from there. They were a gift.

@littlek: if it wasn't footed pants or sleepers, it was these crochet booties (not exactly these but almost exactly). We got ours in 3-4 different colors.

@CupQuakeWalk: those booties are adorable. I want all of them!

@swedishfish: they were amazing!! Etsy has them for $14.00+ but the baby boutique I got them from sold them for $6! The owner crocheted them herself and they were gorgeous (just like the pic above).

We used socks when they weren't in footed sleepers. I had trouble getting them to stay on DD, though, because she was so small.

LO was born in November and we mostly used socks. I liked the Trumpette and GAP socks the best - the Carters and Circo socks that we have just came off all the time. The Gymboree ones were OK.
I was drooling over some booties similar to what @CupQuakeWalk: mentioned, but we never got any.

Both of mine were winter babies. They wore either footed sleepers or socks and sometimes both. I would put them in a snowsuit to go out. My DD is almost 8 months and has never worn shoes.

J is a Christmas baby and I had socks & shoes on him from the start, baby Uggs
Biggest waste was the baby snowsuits though, never used them once, cute though!

I'd probably just stay inside with the baby until winter passed!

@CupQuakeWalk: those are so cute!! Can you send me the name of the seller?

The "Little Bundles" Old Navy socks were my favorite (January baby). They are thick and the elastic doesn't stretch out! And cheap!

@Emsmems: I LOVED old navy socks for LO!! still do
@littlek: I had a late Sept baby, so she was still a newborn in the cold weather here in NE. I would just do socks or a sleeper, and once she was a little bigger, I had a pair of ugg-like boots from target (hard soled) that I used on her for looks (maybe 3 months on?) but took off her once we got some place.

@littlek: he had the Erin booties in Chestnut and his feet were always toasty!

My favorite thing for my December baby was a convertible snowsuit, it had a zipper between the legs that you could convert to a sack, so much easier than the three other snowsuits I had.
I'd just plop him in there and then into the bassinet on the stroller, he was warm and toasty in the Alpine air.
