Anyone have a patagonia coat? Worth the $?

We've had Gap and Boden and I liked both but Boden has better style options. For a baby that age, I would probably get a snowsuit instead of a coat, but I never had to deal with car seats, so I don't know if that would be complicated.

We've had winter coats from Patagonia, North Face, Gap and Target. But I'm in the Seattle area and our winters are not severe and fairly short. So all the jackets have worn well and look basically brand new so in that way it's been worth the money (most of the coats were gifted and we were able to sell at consignment). Both the Patagonia and North Face jackets were reversible so I liked that about them. My favorite value is definitely the Gap puffer coat - super warm, cute, and if you wait for sales you can get at a great price

Patagonia is really nice but I got ours on super sale at the outlet- haven't been able to justify full price or anywhere near it (and we live in northern New England with tough winters, and play outside a lot!!!).
I usually get winter stuff at the second hand store if I can. It requires frequent trips until I find something good though. I found a thin coat from Polarn o pyret that can go in the car seat (it's the weight of patAgonias down sweater coats), and a nice one from l.l.bean for play. I actually really like the l.l.bean one quite a bit. If I'm ever ready to buy new snow stuff I might go with them!!
For what it's worth, my approach to winter dressing is all about layers- I do spend money to get nice woolens. Then we add a fleece later and then out wear. Always toast warm!!

I bought my son a puffer before I knew any better, he was a year old in the winter and the poor kid was just learning to walk and he couldn't manage. His arms stuck straight out.
If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't even bother with a coat for him.

Are you in a city?
Since your kid won't be walking during the winter months, I personally wouldn't splurge on an expensive winter coat... Unless you will be in a stroller constantly, then get a really warm bunting outfit. I live in the suburbs and got away with a zip blanket over the car seat. We didn't play outside much because he couldn't walk!
I do love the Gap puffers! I'm planning on reusing them with DS2!

I've been buying North Face at the end of season each year. Puffy but not too thick, reversible and very warm.

I love Columbia for babies. We went with a Benton Springs fleece last year (DD wore in 3 - 7 months old). We didn't spend time outside, just too and from the car, so a thick fleece was good enough. If you are not going to spend a lot of time outside, a highly recommend it!

I'd imagine at 5m you won't be playing outside in the snow, so I think a fleece or even a heavy hooded sweatshirt is fine. That's all I plan to get for A, who is 7m now. We don't live in the city so she's really only outside to go to/from the car. Fleece and a blanket are plenty.

Both of my kids have had the Patagonia down jackets (and will again this year). I like that they are warm but thin so perfect for house to car, car to school, etc and fit under the carseat straps fine. We've also gotten 2 winters of wear out of each coat, plus then should get at least 2 kids (3 will depend on if LO3 is a boy and wants a purple coat...ha), and they still look great. I feel like we have definitely gotten our $$ worth!
That being said, we also have separate snow clothes for actually playing in the snow or skiing or whatnot. Last year for DD2 (she was 1 in Nov), we did just do a fleece/down bunting because she didn't "play" in the snow more than...2-3x? And then the bunting was still good for babywearing, just being outside in the cold, etc.
I had a 6-12m bunting from Boden that I used sparingly. Mostly at that age the kids were just bundled up in the carseat with clothes and blankets if we were out and about.
Sooooo...I think the Patagonia jackets can totally be a good buy, but at this young age will depend a lot on your weather and how much you are actually planning to be outside/babywearing/etc. If you do get one, I'd get it a size up for sure!

Just saw how small your baby is- I'd just get a fleece bunting and a warm blanket or bundle thing for the car seat.

I'd just get a car seat cover (shower cap style) and a stroller muff. No need for a winter coat in the baby stage.

For a five month old I'd do a bunting and cover wth s blanket as needed in the car seat

We haven't done winter coats for ours until they're a year old. I had winter babies in Canada.
We did stroller muffs and wool blankets in the car seat for their first winters them a Columbia fleece bunting for the second.
We've had Patagonia and liked them. We had the down sweater and I always worried it wasn't quite warm enough. I prefer the LLBean 3in1 parka for ease of use in the car.

Buntings were my favorite at that age. If you plan to drive while wearing the coat, make sure it's not too puffy (fleece or not overly puffy coat) because lots of puffy coats aren't car seat safe.

We love the Patagonia baby down sweater as well because it's car seat safe but agree with others that it isn't super warm so you need to layer under it on super cold days (we used a Columbia fleece underneath).

@Alba4: nope, not in a big city. We'll just be taking her in and out of the car.
Thanks for the feedback ladies!

I just had a cheap carter's one I got on sale. DD turned 1 last Dec and honestly we weren't out THAT much to warrant a nice/expensive coat.

We used a fleece bunting for the first year and Patagonia jackets for the toddler years. The Patagonia jackets have been worth it for us. Our first jacket has already lasted 3 winters and going on its 4th winter between two kids.
