I am trying to figure out what kind of shoes to buy for winter, she has just started taking tentative steps and we have wet, snowy and slushy winters here. Do I just buy regular shoes (likely softer soles like See Kai Run smaller) and buy Stonz to go over top or will that be awkward for her? Bogs? We will definitely be outside most days so we will need something.

@Cole: I just picked up the little Ugg knock offs at target for our 1.5 year old. We get a lot of snow here so I wanted something more than shoes but not so much as a bulky winter boot for everyday use. Maybe something like that would work? They are pretty light weight.

will she be walking in snow a lot? snow shoes are really bulky, but the ones from target are pretty light. i would go with those!

The local baby store here recommended Stonz boots, like actual boots, not the ones that just sort of go over their shoes. They are really light weight and flexible, but they are expensive for something that might not get worn all that much (our winter last year had so much snow my toddler literally couldn't walk it, it was way taller than her and I could barely get over some of the snow piles). We had a hand me down pair of sorels which were fine and kept her warm and dry but we're sort of cumbersome for an early walker.

I would just get normal pre-walker shoes. Last year DS started walking in the fall and we did fine with just shoes and not boots. He was just too little and too new to walking to be walking in snow and slush. We would carry him or put him in the stroller instead.
