Sounds like overtired could definitely be it. My LO is ten weeks and we had a few bad nights like that. I started keeping an eye on exactly how long he has been awake, aiming to put him down almost every 90 minutes or so, and it happens less often now.
Although he is just more fussy in the evenings in general so I do believe in the witching hour. Hope it gets better for you!

Lorelei would get like that during growth spurts. Not inconsolable exactly, but just really grumpy and hungry. It could also be that she is uncomfortable from something. Lorelei can get like that when she is sick (though it doesn't usually last so long at a stretch, but she will wake out of a sound sleep and just be hysterical rather than just a little fussy). I would keep an eye on it and if it continues to seem really out of character and like it could be from discomfort maybe get her seen by a doctor. I'm guessing it was just tired/grumpy though. Glad you got her to sleep! I always feel so relieved when they finally fall asleep after being so upset like that.

It could happen. My daughter was pretty much always crying at nighttime during her newbornhood, lol.

@Silva: it breaks your heart doesn't it? My LO is a mess if we let him get overtired! Especially at the end of the day. It was hard because it felt like it happened so suddenly. We went from having the sleepy newborn who went down when he needed to, to this baby who will get overstimulated and overtired if we don't pay attention.
I have been trying to work on bedtime routine for a few weeks. It's still a work in progress. He doesn't wake up at the same time every day, or eat at the same times (I EBF) so that is a challenge.
