What will you do them during the summer?
Our local Y has a decent day program during the summer, as does the school district. If they're old enough I wouldn't be opposed to a week of summer camp, and perhaps a week spent with their grandparents if they're willing. I want to make summer fun for my kids, but I know we'll still have to work.
What will you do during summers if you work?

We will do the same, a summer camp somewhere. I wish there were more educational ones though. Ours here just do a bunch of free play and field trips.

My thought is a couple different summer camps mixed with (hopefully) grandparents.
I know the local Waldorf does a summer program that I'm very interested in. There's also a go away Friends camp....but I'm not sure I'm open to away camp.
The problem with day camps too is they are hardly full days!

Might have to be Chinese school for them just like what I did growing up! We haven't really discussed this too much though...

God I hated summer Chinese school. I think I'd rather do weekends during the school year and let them have off during the summer!

@locavore_mama: Yes, a lot of the more educational/cool ones aren't full days and they are more expensive.

@T.H.O.U.: If I were to do just free play I think I would look into hiring a summer nanny instead!
And yeah, most of the kids were ABC (American Born Chinese) and some couldn't speak a lick of Chinese besides what was taught in school.
@Mrs. High Heels: it was the pits being in summer school ALL day when it was beautiful out. And the school I went to didn't have AC!

My DH is a teacher, so he'll have the summers off with LO. We will most likely send her to some day programs, but it will be lots of daddy and LO time.

I'm guessing we'll just kick into a summer daycare program, maybe a summer camp for a week and some time with Grandparents.

I have no idea yet, we have a pool at home, so maybe swim lessons there with my parents watching.
I want to see what my sin is interested in and go from there, plus time abroad with my inlaws!

Yes! When they are older we def want to send them to NYC to spend a week or two with my mom for the summer.

@locavore_mama: haha not in NC. It will be nice having the same schedules, but we'll be living frugally for the rest of our lives. It makes me sad when I think about all the fun vacations and things I got to do as a child, but I guess that's what the grandparents will be for 
I'm just a little bitter these days with all the cuts in the budget.

Our town has a lot of great camps, both educational and not, so we will put her in a lot of those. I also get a lot of vacation, so I'll hoard it and take off a couple weeks throughout the summer. My dad will be retired at that point, so we'll send her to him for a week or so. Luckily I have a niece and nephew in town with two WOHPs, so I'll have plenty of advice and experience from them.

ugh i have no idea what parents do and i will totally be mooching ideas off my friends, whether we get a nanny for the summer (so expensive here! but i guess we won't be paying for school then...) or day camps or what. My mom worked school hours so we always had off during the summer!

Good question. When LO goes to school I'll probably be working party time. I always went to summer camp and loved it. Plus we have both sets of grandparents living here.... my mom is retired and my MIL is looking for a job in the school system so she'd have summers off and could help.

The plan now is that when DD enters public school (next year), she'll be enrolled in full time care at her current Montessori school. We'll probably take a vacation and also enroll her in a short camp if there is something that interests her.

I wish schools would switch to year round schedules! Much easier to find coverage for an additional week-long winter break than 12 weeks in the summer!
We have it easier than some since my husband is off most of the summer (professor), with meetings once or twice a week over the summer. But, he still works in the summer (writing) so we'll be looking into day camps, as well as Camp Grandma S and Camp Grandma C!

Both my parents worked so I have plenty of ideas for what to do with mine during summers. Probably a mix of camp, family, vacation, bible school, sports and whatever else. They will be busy! No hanging around at home

@lilteacherbee: agreed. My husband is a teacher with a masters degree and he makes diddly squat. It sucks. I don't think we could ever be a one income family unless he switched schools and gets a hell of a raise. AND his school doesn't have summer off so the biggest perk of being a teacher doesn't even apply to him!

Camps and grandparents, plus DH and I have enough flexibility at our jobs to take off additional time if we need/want to.

@Mrs. Pen: It's horrible what's happening to education! Last week, my state voted to not pay teachers extra for master's degrees (unless they already have them, they'd be grandfathered in). I know teachers who have been teaching 5 years that get paid like $20 more a month than their first year teaching because they have frozen the salary scale. And NC is number #49 in the country for teacher pay.
DH is considering getting his masters to become a principal in the next few years. That's the only way I'll ever be able to stay home

@Mrs. Pen: Ouch. No summers off? That is one of the best perks! My DH and I both look forward to saving some money on childcare in the summers once LO is in school.

Our game plan is to send our kids to visit grandparents during the in between school and camp weeks. Our kids will have four cities/ grandparents to spend time with. Then, camp would be something that interests them- sportsn, educational etc.

Our daycare turns into a full day summer camp in the summers... luckily we get guaranteed placement since we do full time daycare during the school year. The summer camp wait lists are like 2 years long!
I believe the organization that runs our daycare also has full day summer camp for school-aged kids as well... hopefully we get to stay on those priority lists since we'll have paid for 7 year-round tuitions total!!

@mrsjazz: nope. His school has spring and summer quarters. There are four weeks that the students get off, but he's still required to put in 40 office hours so he doesn't even get that time off unless he uses PTO.
@lilteacherbee: I think education is lacking. Salary for teachers is awful and I feel that less and less people will want to teach as a result. Even college professors aren't making enough.

My two older LO's bounce between home with my DH (when he has days off during the week), my inlaws or my mom. And they've gone a couple random days here and there to the daycare's summer camp. Like Monday's they take them Swimming and Wed they take them to the movies. It's only $35 a day for both girls total for the day camp. But, the whole point of taking them out of daycare in the summer was to save money so they have only gone a handful of times just so everyone got a change of pace.

Summer camp and visits to my parents house in GA. I will probably take off time during the summer as well.
