We tried the underwear method with my 26mo son a few weeks ago, and I’m pretty sure we failed. Getting ready to try again, so trying to figure out how.
We’ve been sitting him on the potty to pee occasionally since 20 months. He knows what to do, and made it through day 1 of underwear fine. No accidents, though he found the frequency of the trips annoying. He did not poop, though. Day 2, he had to poop, and wouldn’t. He’d scream and cry, but he wouldn’t even pee because poop might slide out. He would ask to sit on the potty, then wouldn’t pee, wouldn’t poop, but would scream, sob, and clutch at me until I took him down. We tried putting him in a diaper, but he wouldn’t pee or poop in the diaper, either. Just screamed and grabbed his bottom. We know it wasn’t constipation, because poop escaped all day (which led to more screaming). By 2:30, my husband sat him on the floor and legit convinced him it was okay to poop in the diaper, and with it came all the pee he’d been holding.
Poop anxiety was something I had expected, but I had heard nothing of a child refusing to pee at all or refusing to poop in the diaper. The screaming did us in. If it happens again, should we just let him scream and not pee all day?
