Hi everyone. Hoping you can help quickly. When you were or are pumping at work, how long is each pumping session? Do you need to use all of your personal "free" break time for your sessions? Do you get any extra time on top of that to pump? How long is long enough to pump? Do you have to use leave time or come in early/leave late to make up the time? My boss wants to talk to me about it in about 10 min., so I appreciate any quick responses. Thanks!

It takes between 20 and 30 minutes to pump. Longer depending on where the pumping location is. I did use all of my personal time. If I had 3 pump sessions I did work a little later (usually I pumped 2x and fed him at lunch). If you are hourly, they MUST provide a location that is NOT a bathroom and allow you to use it for however long you need it. Yes, they don't have to pay you for the extra time so you may need to make it up. But I personally wouldn't bring that up until they do.

For me pumping sessions were anywhere from 30-45 minutes plus time for cleaning all the parts. I work for a consulting firm so all of that time was on my own time as we don't really get "breaks". I worked 10+ hour days just to accommodate my pumping.

@pregnantbee: you can save some time by keeping as much of your pump together as possible. Also, I only cleaned my parts at the end of the day I just put them in the fridge with the milk between pumps.

@brownie: That's what I'm doing. I bought a mini-fridge to have at my desk, I refrigerate parts and bottles between sessions. The room I use is right next to my cube, though others do use it throughout the day. I can try keeping pump set-up a bit more than I am currently doing. Basically, I only have 15-min breaks and an hour for lunch, but it's been taking me more like 30 for set-up, pumping, break-down. Need to get it to more like 15 min. total for each of the 15-min. breaks. It's only my first full-time week back, so I'm still getting used to the routine.

@pregnantbee: will they let you distribute some of your lunch? I got two fifteen minute breaks and a half hour lunch (1 hr total). I did three twenty minute pump sessions and then ate at my desk. I needed at least 15 minutes of actual pump time. I gt very efficient at setting up and putting away.

I pump 3x a day about 10 mins each. I don't clean the parts just stick them in the fridge and reuse at each session. I carry the Medela steam bags just in case.

@Thehistoryofus: Hmm. I could ask about distributing lunch. In the meantime, I'm going to try and become super speedy set-up/break-down lady and see what happens. They're cutting me some slack this week since it's my first fulltime week back.
@lydg: Good idea about the steam bags.....Will think about that, though the only microwave is really far from my desk/pump room. May not be worth it.

@pregnantbee: There really is no need to wash the parts between pumpings as long as you can store the parts in a fridge or with an ice pack. That saves tons of time not having to assemble/de-assessable and clean!
