I'm in! I really want to swim tonight but it looks like it will be actively snowing during my gym time, so I might do jillian michaels yoga instead

@808love: Good thing to remember. I don't see the scale moving, but I feel my muscles getting tighter.

You should check out the website my sister got me hooked on, ToneItUp. They had a workout plan every week. I bought the exclusive workouts for $25. We got to look at their nutrition plan from a friend of hers, and totally not worth it in my opinion. She showed it to me last year and I was like, yeah, online workouts, whatever. But I'm only on week two and I love it. I'm using the Beachbody Ondemand for the cardio/classes in their since getting to the gym is tough with two littles.

@mrsjyw: I've been following BBG on Instagram for a while and even downloaded the guides but haven't started them! For some reason, it's harder for me to do something when there isn't a real person/video in front of me showing me How do you like it? I'm doing the 21D Fix videos now and really like them so far!

@LuLu Mom: I am the complete opposite of you - I've been on 21 day fix since October/November and while I love the work outs and I am very disciplined with them, I can NOT follow their meal plan! I always hate the idea of dieting and looking at their containers makes me really angry. Even if I do try to follow, I'll give up in a few days and since I am mad I'd snack more than I would/should.

Say if I do only eat salad with some protein for lunch, my brain just gets mad cuz I didn't get carbs, and I'd just "compensate" on that on my own... argh! I am Chinese so I grew up thinking that one must eat rice or noodles or some kind of carbs at lunch and dinner... grrrr

Besides I just can't stay away from the occasional chocolate!! How do you get disciplined on the diet? I am seeing results even though I eat whatever I want (sans soda, sweet drinks and any sort of milk - that i can follow). I bet I'd get 6 packs if I follow their diet lol

@808love: I have heard that your weight can fluctuate 3-5 lbs (wow) per day! Are you weighing yourself daily?

@irene: I am using the containers for H&C and hated it the first few days but now I love it - my diet has been my biggest downfall since I LOVE carbs - the containers help me portion out the different categories of food - plus I love that it doesn't restrict dairy (my DH was doing Advocare and dairy was a big no!)

I have been working out for 1 year at the gym and my body looks exactly the same - so I am sticking with the containers for 60 days to see how big of a difference eating cleanly makes for me. When I was younger I could eat anything all day and never gain a pound - now at 40.... not so much!

  6. irene

    nectarine / 2964 posts

@Mamaof2: Good for you!!! I always eat healthy, just the problem with portion and carbs, and chocolate hahaha! What is H&C? It doesn't limit dairy???? How does that work? For 21 day fix they said no milk whatsoever (and some tiny tiny cheese containers ;-)) and only in very few days (forgot how many) a week you can have x oz of not fat milk and replace one of your carb container (and you are only supposed to have two tiny carb containers a day). Ahhh.

For the 21 day fix they suggested drinking shakelogy to replace one of your meals. It was way too expensive so I did some research and bought another brand of protein powder.... just that looking at it I have no incentive or motivation to try! I haven't had time (OK excuse) to figure out recipes to adding fruits and veggies to make it a delicious shake so I just haven't tried that...

And I am with you. Once upon a time, I eat anything, drink anything, no exercises, and I have never have any problems. IT was after I have a baby and around/after 40 my husband started mentioning I have a muffin top, and I no longer could wear my slim dresses and walk out of the closet and out of the door

  7. Mamaof2

    squash / 13208 posts

@irene: it does limit it but its still allowed! For instance feta cheese on a salad to me makes all the difference in the world - so I love that I can add it and count it as a healthy fat!

I do drink shakeology but not as a meal - as a mid-AM snack - I love chocolate with a TB of PB - yum!!

H&C is their new program Hammer and Chisel

@Mamaof2: yes, I weighed myself everyday last week because my family was visiting in town and I was trying to stay motivated after parties and events. And to punish myself-lol!! I guess I'll stop now!! Thanks for the reminder. I have been losing overall since I started working out consistently so this is the first time I saw a little gain. Oh and I was the same way. No problems with weight gain ever until the 40 mark! So this is all new to me. (I hate wasting money on clothes I don't fit!)

You are motivating me to do H&C . I just want to finish T25 all the way through and in a few weeks I'll check in with you and your results.

For a little over two months, I drink Shakeology as breakfast but I'm super hungry by 11 if no snack. It is so yummy to me with just vanilla soy milk. I never add anything else. I also only do a half scoop because it is satisfying enough and I wanted to stretch the bag to two months. They have a deal right now. It is called a Shakeology challenge pack that is $10 more with 3 months of the Beachbody on Demand instead of $37 for 3 months. They just came out with a new flavor last week-cafe latte that supposedly has the same amount of caffeine as the chocolate. I think I will try that next then I should be where I want to be and stop.
@irene I had the fix, tried it for a few days and didn't care for the workout program. It was too slow. I used the containers a tiny bit just to visualize the 'suggested' portions. By dumping the noodles out on my plate I could see how much I was 'supposed to' eat. That was another piece to the portion control puzzle.

@808love: Wow really??? You must be super in shape then, there are days (Friday especially) that there are parts that I could hardly keep up! Good for you!

  11. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@irene: Haha- though I'd love to accept that compliment...no, I'm not super in shape. I just have a short attention span and can't last that long! Plus I didn't sweat within the first couple minutes with The Fix, like I do with T25. I definitely don't have the best form either. I cheat or shall I say 'modify' way too much.

On another note, I think everyone can find something different that works for them. I don't think one program is better than the other. The best program for you is the one you will actually do!

@jennyg: I'm checking out that site, based on your recommendation! I don't like to pay anything anymore (used up my fitness budget for the next year!) so that free kettle booty workout looks good.

Guys - I am PMSing so bad and I don't want to work out I just want to eat chocolate!!! Last night I DID eat chocolate and it was delicious!

I did get my but in gear at 8:30 and did a 35 min cardio workout though - today is rest day thank goodness!!

I am bloated too - ugh!!!

  13. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@Mamaof2: LOL!! I'm assuming it was a small piece of chocolate? Yay for working out at night! Stay hydrated today! That might help.

Are you used to working out at night? It's a new thing for me. I found when I crossed that mental barrier of 'I can't workout too late at night' it was very empowering.

I just had a bonus walk with my mom for 45 minutes today. Does that mean I can skip my regular workout? Hehe...considering it but I just don't want to lose momentum/routine!

@808love: yes it was small but I felt so guilty....well, kinda

In the past I worked out from 7-8pm but lately I have been trying to do it around 6pm - but starting at 8:30 was hard!!

Yesterday was my rest day but back to the grind today!

  17. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@Mamaof2: haha! I just read today you have to treat yourself once (or twice a week) so your body stays in fat-burning mode. Hehe!! Consider that your required nutrition. I'm not much help, am I? By the way, your avatar makes me happy!

I worked out yesterday, in addition to my walk...and gained again. And I'm still 'under' (strict) calories on MFP so I'm going to throw out the scale and be happier. Of course, before and after pics tell a different, more positive story. I told my husband to hide the scale from me but he said no. But he's ok with throwing it out. (Darn, ectomorph!) Maybe I should put it in some really inconvenient place like out in my daughter's backyard playhouse. Just in case I 'need' it again.

@Mamaof2: @808love: and everyone who uses home training videos, any suggestions of videos I should look at that works on the belly/abs area and at the same time burn more calories / cardio? I have the 21 Fix and while I love it, I am annoyed how there are two "restoration" days that basically burn no calories. I have a fitbit while the toughest days burn 200+ calories in 30 minutes, the restoration days burn 50-70 calories in 30 minutes ! Grrrr. I don't need restoration I just need to burn fat lol

My belly is the biggest problem. Since using the 21 day fix it does come down significantly but I wouldn't mind it go down more!! It seems like the abs work out doesn't burn as much calories though. And I really only have 30 minutes a day.

Any suggestions? I don't mind sticking with the same franchise because that is the only work out video that worked for me so far. There are other instructors that I can't look at them for 30 minutes each day!

@808love: Are you sure your eating enough? On the FB group I am in several people mentioned they weren't losing and so they upped their calories (healthy calories obviously) and then lost weight. Just a thought!

Oh and thanks for the info - I could use another piece of chocolate

@irene: I am sure you know you cant spot reduce - while doing H&C they are always telling you to hold your stomach in while doing the exercises so I would think that whatever it is that your doing at home just make sure you are doing that. I like the Agility work-out I did (but not sure if its available w/o buying H&C - Autumn says that agility is great for the abs because you are changing steps quickly which require you to engage your core.

I also tried their 10 mins abs - which was HARD!! It was basically 10 exercises for 1 minute each - again it was part of H&C but you might be able to find something similar online

  20. 808love

@Mamaof2: I kind of think it could be after effects of what I had eaten over the weekend. I guess 3 days of eating well doesn't immediately erase the effects of weekend blindness. I'm eating enough. It's probably the hidden sauces and salt that is not good for me too. -Anyway, the scale is outside in the playhouse so I won't be weighing in for at least another month!

@irene: I just saw your message. I am pretty much in the same boat. Everything shrunk and toned but now I'm just figuring out how to knock out the mid-section. I think Hammer and Chisel may be the answer but it is pretty tough! So working my way up. I'm sticking with patience and consistency for now because I finally found a trainer I am willing to work with for 25 mins, daily! I'm dying to experiment and try free stuff on my Beachbody on Demand but every time I do try something fun and new, I get off my routine because I am too sore the next day or too hungry. So I'm sticking with what works for now and hoping my tummy will come down even further when my body burns off all the rest of the stuff. Oh and I think I mentioned it before, but I am doing Focus T-25, which I really like!

@Mamaof2: I dont have the agility work out, but I do have the 10 minute ab work out which I seldom does, because I truly can only and am willing to spend 30 minutes a day I did it today though... fitbit said it burned 30 something calories during that 10 minutes. grr. And it burns!

Yes I know in the back of my mind you can't spot reduce... I remember back then when i was pumping / breastfeeding my belly was FLAT! I then read 1 oz of breastmilk = 20 calories. So say I pump+breastfeed 6 times a day, 5 oz each, I would have been burning 600 calories just sitting there back then!(Well OK, i forgot all about the pain and commitment and pump every 3 hours...etc.) I wish there is a work out that i can burn, say 400 calories within 30 minutes and that I can keep up with, haha.

Which facebook group did you join? I know there are a ton of those 21 day fix groups out there I dunno which one to join! THen I feel bad because I didn't really have a before photo (I was disgusted of myself) and now the "after" it is really not going any tighter than what it is now (hence my desire to change it up). And I am not really following the meal plan!

@808love: Thanks... I will look into H&C and T-25! Have no idea what those are

    Ah! Ate too much today!!!!!
Morning: 1 full hardboiled egg, oatmeal (with 1 tsp sugar), half a banana in the morning, and green tea. Then my son couldn't finish his hardboiled egg so I ate his egg yolk too lol

Afternoon / brunch: Coffee with 2 packs brown sugar and a touch of cream (Yeah i know), 1.5 strawberry crepe with powdered sugar (forgot to tell them to skip the sugar), maybe a bit of bacon from my son's plate

Snack: 1 macaroon (Husband came back from business trip that had a transition flight at paris, he always buy macaroons. You can't say no to macaroon lol)

Night: Chirashi sushi (raw fish on bowl of rice), some miso soup, some edamame, 3 fish balls with a lot of sauce, I know

Then I did 40 minutes of work out total (30 + 10 minute of abs from 21 day fix), Fitbit said I burned around 155 calories total. And I am still feeling stuffed.... ah well.

Diet is my worst enemy. I can NOT diet to save my life. There is always some sort of chocolate in the kitchen and it is always calling me. And plus! I always feel bad when my son doesn't finish his plate, I can't throw things away because I feel bad then I eat it and I feel even worse!! How do you guys control yourself?

  23. 808love

    pomelo / 5866 posts

@irene: Not finishing LOs food is one of the hardest things too! So I just make my portion somewhat smaller and consider her leftovers as part of my serving. I factor it in before I even eat. Also I drink A chocolate shake every morning for breakfast so that curbs almost all cravings. I wish I could drink it after working out as a recovery but I don't always like to workout in the morning. We had cake at LOs party last night and I only had two bites and wasn't craving anymore. I am getting better. Also I let myself 'fail' twice since I started meaning I went off the wagon for about a week twice but never gave up entirely. Every time I 'came back' was with renewed determination and I'm getting better at everything.
I'm glad this thread is not just about the right thing to do because we know what to do, it is just how do we build self control, patience and determination in all the ups and downs of the struggle to get motivated after being somewhat sedentary for awhile!!

@808love: I totally agree with the idea that we're talking about when we have great successes, not that we should eat celery instead of cake. Good for you for only having a few bites. I did not eat DS's pizza on Friday and I was so proud of myself.

@irene: I love chocolate as well. When I was dieting for my wedding, I would take 8 chocolate chips and put them in a little ramekin. I got to eat them throughout the evening, but that's it, no more. Maybe I need to bring that back.

@Crystal: I agree! Getting on here and posting helps keep me on track.

I haven't checked in a few days, but I have kept up with the workouts. I had to run 3 miles on Friday, and boy was it rough. I was 6 minutes longer than I guessed I would be. I guess I have lots of room for improvement when the 8 week challenge is over.

I am going to keep up with the workouts, which I'm actually starting to really like. Especially when I am getting better at certain moves and feeling stronger. I still need to get the eating under control. I feel like this diet plan really sums up my eating habits.

@irene: Its the Master's Challenge FB group

We are all doing Hammer and Chisel (H&C) but there are lots of great food tips on there too!

As far as eating your kids food - I guess its just willpower - I read when my 1st was a toddler that was the #1 reason moms gain weight - they eat all their dinner and then eat their kids - so I have always made sure to never do this! I will save their food if there is a lot left - also try giving them smaller portions.

I had a BAD 2 days - started my period and felt like crap!!! Didn't work out on Sunday at all and ate whatever I wanted - I was just in a crappy mood! Yesterday I ate horribly again but did exercise!

Today I feel better and am back on track!
Breakfast was 2 hard boiled eggs, oatmeal with cinnamon and 1/2 banana

@808love: Very good point about drinking the chocolate shake and taming the chocolate craving! I didn't think about that. For some reason, I am OK to cold cut on a lot of things that I used to eat/drink and I thought I couldn't live without - soda, tea with cream and sugar, my morning microwave puff pastry, wine, the occasional McDonald's sausage egg mcmuffin (!!!!)... and I just can NOT stop eating chocolate. Then carbs. I was able to not eat chocolate at all during my pregnancy! I guess something about the missing sugar I crave...

Shakeology is just so expensive. I don't want to give them more money haha. Where do you guys buy yours again? Is there a cheaper option with chocolate and taste just as good?

@Mamaof2: Ah, would love to join but I am not doing Hammer and Chisel, at least not yet.. I am a bit worried I can't keep up.

And I agree with you I try to not eat my child's leftover too, but there are times it was just so little to save I just shove it into my mouth. I just feel so bad throwing out food! I am sure they throw out a lot at school (I pack his lunch and I am sure he doesn't eat half of it) but I am not seeing it. I just feel horrible being part of the first world throwing out food when so many people are starving. Then I regret it afterwards because I have to spend more time to work them off my body lol. I can give LO less food, but say it is dinner time and I gave him a little bit of food, he finish it (and seldom ask for more), and he'd whine that he's hungry at bedtime! Argh!

Good for you to be back on track. My breakfast this morning was oatmeal with a tiny bit of brown sugar, half a banana and some blueberries. Then a small leftover bite of homemade pancakes from my LO's plate (yeah), and green tea. Then I ate an apple for mid morning snack.

  32. Mamaof2

    squash / 13208 posts

@irene: you could try any chocolate protein shake (I thought Target had a tasty one) and try that instead of Shakeology.

See, that is how calories add up though - a bite of pancake here (50 cals), a leftover chicken nugget (70 calories), rest of a sandwich (80 cals) - and before you know it you have added an entire extra meal to your day.
I know its hard but I think if you could stop that it would make a difference!

@JennyG: Loved your menu plan!! lol!!
@irene: I like the taste of Shakeology. I get it online at Team Beachbody but no deals, unless you want to do a Challenge pack in which you can buy a program along with Shakeology. There are many less expensive ones out there. I am sticking to what works for me. I once bought a GNC sale shake and just wasn't motivated to drink it everyday. Really you don't need shakes though....but you just might like them. I find it works for me. Well most days... hehe! It totally curbs my appetite for sweets!

LOs princess bday party was yesterday so after it was all over we celebrated the after-party by eating a lot of spaghetti....and meatballs at The Old Spaghetti Factory. And I didn't work out so yesterday was the first official day I was off the wagon. Getting back on track again. I am noticing my weekend pattern is not so good. Also it's always the days I don't start with my shake, I break my pattern of healthy eating.

@808love: I know what you mean about weekends being the worst. I'm trying to get in the habit of staying on track on the weekends. The workout I'm following talked about how if you start going off track on Friday night through Sunday, you're off track almost half the month. I obviously knew that, but they really hit home that I would be completely negating all my hard work. That being said, we're about to get a blizzard, so that means all the yummy carby foods.

@irene: I was drinking Arbonne shakes before and during pregnancy. I loved them and they weren't as expensive as shakeology. I can't wait to start again, but I'm not sure they agreed with DD when she was first born as I'm breastfeeding.

I am loving how much stronger I feel when doing workouts. I've had to start repeating some and feel so much better doing some moves. I was supposed to do SYC (spin, yoga, class) on Tuesday, but I've been using beachbody ondemand for that. I did a cardio 21 day fix workout and it was tough, but I didn't quit. Well, maybe I did a few moves without weights, but still.

    Hey, joining you ladies!

I joined the gym back in July and have consistently gone at least 3 times a week, usually 4. Some breaks in there for an ankle injury (which coincided with the holidays argh). And I've gained back all the weight I had lost so far. ugggggh. Freaking holidays. I just cannot believe that I'm back up 5 pounds.

So I've been working out more, tracking diet in MFP, and in 3 weeks have not lost any weight!!! Not even half a pound. I'm so discouraged. I just don't understand why my weight will not budge. I'm trying to not focus on it. I've probably gained muscle, retaining water, etc.... but uggggh.

Kids have been sick this week, so have only made it to the gym once this week. hoping to make it tonight and go Saturday morning.

Oh and I have a chocolate addiction that i can't seem to control!! I hate that I love sweets so much. Any tips on how to stop all the chocolate eating?!

@JennyG: I'm okay doing a slow change but yes, I think 2 days in a row (Sat and Sun) are a bit much so I think I'll just do 1 day off. Actually 1 day is supposed to be a Stretch workout but I lost the DVD so I've just been taking it off! Haha. Anyway, I'm feeling good about my clothing and think I will buy something back in a size medium. I've been a large this past year and it's starting to look baggy. @mrskc: Welcome! I know how you feel with the scale lying to me when I've worked hard. I still log on MFP to take a look at my overall sugar levels and see any patterns in the type of foods but I do not trust the calorie measurements so I'm not going to rely on that. I really think it's the type of food I'm eating that is more important than the calories. By the way, nobody is allowed to mention the c-word here! Just kidding...but really...

Hope you are having a nice workout today, Ladies!

Oh and by the way, what would you do if .....someone you haven't seen for a long time (at work) drops off a hot cocoa to you...and you have to sit next to them all day? Drink it, right? It's the only right thing to do in this social situation, right?! I mean think of the professional implications... Did I mention that she knows it is my favorite Starbucks drink? Aiya!!
