One of my good friends is studying to be a doula, and she is actually going through the same Bradley Method course I am as part of her observation hours. She needs to act as a student doula for several births to complete her hours. I am thinking of letting her attend ours. She has been my biggest supporter in learning about natural birth. I think she'd be great! Would you ever let a friend act as your doula?

Definitely. I'm willing to bet a friend would also be able to offer a more affordable rate.
We're opting out of hiring a doula because our insurance deductible is already quite high, and we can't justify the cost (they're quite expensive in our area, unfortunately). Luckily, the nurses at our birth center are rather liberal, and well trained in natural pain management.

Yes- my best friend is a homebirth midwife, and she will be our doula/labor assistant at our hospital birth.
I feel really secure having her there- she knows me better than almost anyone, and I trust her knowledge & experience.

It would depend on the friend. I do have a friend who is a doula, but I definitely don't want her as my doula We're not that close and she already has been vocal on my decision to not have a home birth.

My bff only. All of my other friends tend to annoy after awhile. But, I could be locked in a cell or birthing room with my bestie for a month and be perfectly content.

I think in your situation that sounds perfect!
One of the main reasons we hired a doula is because we wanted an unbiased third party with no emotional baggage ties to us. So going with someone we didn't already know was paramount.

I personally only wanted DH to be there.. Didn't want to share those first few moments with anyone else we knew!

Yep! A girl I went to college with just got certified and needs to attend some so she'll be on my list to call when I'm pregnant!

Maybe... Doulas see everything!! I don't know if I'd be comfortable with my friend forever having mental images of me laboring and giving birth... I'd want to keep our friendship separate... Kind of like how I don't go to friends (or friends of friends) who are OB's. Guess it depends how close I was to the person though.

Absolutely! My friend is a midwife and I have asked her to be present at our birth if at all possible. I think as long as you don't mind her seeing up your hoohah it would be really nice for your doula to be someone you already know and trust.

I'm debating this as well!! I have a friend that's doing coursework and would like to become a doula. But I think I'd feel weird having her see me nekid. I know that once I"m in labor I won't care probably, but the thought it if right now makes me feel weird. I dunno!!!!!!!

I didn't give birth, but our birth mom used my close friend for the birth of our son.

She and I talked about it yesterday and its probably a go. I'm a super modest person, but if there's anyone I'd be comfortable with its her. She's had two babies using the Bradley Method herself, and she's just a very low key, soothing, calming presence. My husband said he'd feel more confident with her there too.
