From speaking with several friends who were homeschooled for various lengths of time, I think the key is to be involved in a co-op or other community of homeschoolers. Every person I know who was home schooled is very successful both socially and in their careers.

We are not necessarily planning on homeschooling but I would do it if we felt it was the best option for our children.
