Haha my whole family are English speakers, but that is the cutest thing ever

I'm sorry but that is adorable and hilarious!

Hub's step-mom is Korean, but I don't think we see them often enough that this will ever be an issue for us.

My whole family speaks English to but I couldn't help but laugh! this is too cute. I wish I had someone in my family that could teach my baby something other than English! My SIL speaks fluid Spanish and I'm jealous that her babies are learning both English and Spanish. I may have to see if she would take students

I don't know anything about how kids learn languages but I always wondered why some ABC's have accents but others don't. We all went to English speaking schools so maybe it has something to do with the home environment?

This is so dang cute!!! I'm sure it'll be fine in the long run. My niece goes dodo's instead of going to bed, I'm sure sooner or later she'll drop the dodo's.

So cute! It was the same with my mom. The few English words she knows is spoken with an accent. It was a non issue for us since we don't see the grandparents that often. And my mom speaks mostly Chinese to him anyway.

I should note that growing up, I only really spoke to my mom (an immigrant)... my dad was quiet, and I wasn't allowed to really watch TV. Plus I only moved to America when I was between 3 and 4. And in the afternoons, I didn't play with other kids because I was practicing piano/violin.

So as a result of all that, I did develop an accent and had to go into speech therapy when I was in elementary school to fix it. The saddest part was that I couldn't tell that I had an accent. My accent sounded great to me, haha!

Anyway that being said though, if your LO has regular access to a lot of unaccented English... they should totally be fine! The concern is when the primary language they hear is accented, and they don't hear much of anything else...

I don't think it will really be a problem, but why not encourage her to teach him Korean instead? He will definitely learn English, from you, school, everything, but if you don't make an effort, it will be a lot harder for him to learn Korean. Plus then you don't have to tell your mom not to teach him English, just focus on that fact that she really is the best teacher of Korean for him.

nope, i wouldn't. i've specifically asked my mom and my in-laws to only speak to lil' CB in korean. while kids are language learning machines and can learn in spite of many things, if you want him to learn korean at all, have your mom only speak to him in korean. i think learning multiple languages is much easier when it can be compartmentalized -- which is why dual language immersion programs are successful. in other words, if your child understands that he can *only* talk with grandma in korean, he'll learn it more quickly because there is a need for it.

my mom and in-laws still slip into english with lil' CB and is hilarious and tick-inducing at times! i feel so badly when i nag them to please speak korean, but it's because i want him to learn korean so badly!

@banana: It's very common for kids exposed to more than one language to be speech delayed... all good!!

I say as long as he hears English other places (like you) he'll be fine!
