I met up with my friend today who is visiting from Asia. She doesn't work since things are so cheap there and they have live in help. So she doesn't take care of her son very much and does nothing for the house. She says she goes to the gym, lounges by the pool, goes out to eat, and meets her friends. I think being 33 is too young to be retired like that! I would be worried about the example I am setting for my child. Would you want that life? I guess it must be common for Asia, but it is very foreign for this American!

No way! I like having responsibilities - it makes me feel like a real grown up, which I like. I know some people my age who live like that and it disgusts me. I mean, having a kid-free vacation and having some time off and being alone and carefree is one thing...But living a life of doing NOTHING, is another.

I wouldn't do well in that environment. And I would certainly not want to not take responsibility for my own child. I will never understand stay at home moms who have full time nannies.

Nope, I thrive on responsibility! Both regular stuff like errands, doing housework etc. and responsibility at work make me feel productive. Heck, at my job, I'm responsible for 17 of OTHER people's children.

Sure I'd love it for a while! But I wouldn't want to set that sort of example for my kids either.
If I had more time though, I would just work more.

If I didn't have Baby Bear, hell yeah! I HATE HATE HATE my job with the heat of a thousand suns. I'd love to do absolutely nothing all.day.long.LOL Well, I'd do something, but work, teaching? No way.
With a child? No. It would teach her to be lazy and expect US to take care of her for life. I believe in a woman knowing how to take care of herself.

the key to living long is staying busy. i would get bored after a little while. even if i were ridiculously wealthy, i'd still want to work.

I used to live in Asia and that was indeed very common. We had live in help after my son was born. I worked at home but took care of LO myself after I was done with work. I didn't do any housework though which was soooo nice! I would get so bored if I didn't have anything productive to do.

I wouldn't mind having someone do the housework, but I want to raise my own kid, thanks. Also, I'm pretty fond of cooking.

@Mrs. Bee: I agree. There are lots of billionaires who still work a lot. They just love what they do and that is why they are successful, too.

I have friends who were very young when they struck it very rich in the dot com boom. There were two types of people. The ones who were able to parlay their success into new and meaningful ventures thrived. But those who just kind of retired became self-destructive, did stupid things, divorced, and basically found ways to ruin their lives and the lives of those around them!

I'd use the free time to volunteer (like sit on boards or do major work for a specific organization) and take classes that interested me and keep me bright and fresh and intelligent. I could care less about the menial adult crap I have to do on a regular basis. I think i would still set a good example for my kids and deserve respect even if I never emptied a dishwasher ever again.
I'd still raise my own kids, though.
ETA: so apparently, no. I couldn't handle a life with no responsibilities. I wouldn't mind being able to pick my own, however.
