This is killing me! I need to talk to our pedi at ds 15 month appt to ask but I'm curious. I'll prob have to go back to work at 6 weeks, which means dd will be in daycare. The first set of shots isn't until 8 weeks. I remember how much ds for sick those first few months and he didn't go until 8 weeks. I'm agonizing over it! Any ideas?

Could family help at all to get you through? Any retired grandparents? I was very fortunate to have 15 weeks maternity leave but if I only had six weeks I would have had my dad fly down for a couple weeks.

Will they even take LO without having shots? Mine wouldn't let R start without her shots.
I agree with MamaMoose about finding someone to cover those couple weeks.

Could you get LO her first set of shots at six weeks? I know here babies are allowed to receive their first immunisations at six weeks, you can go as late as eight weeks, but from six weeks on is fine. DD got her first shots at six weeks to the day.

My ped let R get her shots anytime after six weeks. We got them at seven because her baptism was the day she turned two months old.

I put my un-vaccinated 8 week old in daycare. She got her shots a few days after starting. We had no issues, but if you are concerned could you take an extra couple weeks unpaid like others have suggested? I understand if that's not possible; I took 4 weeks paid/4 unpaid and it was very difficult financially.
As for getting the vaccines early, my pediatrician would not schedule her before 2 months old because my insurance wouldn't cover it.

Same as @Smurfette--our daycare won't even accept infants that don't have their first round of vaccines. I would try and get them earlier if possible or find someone to watch her until she can get them. Even if your daycare would accept her without them I would be really worried about it!

I definitely would not; our daycare won't even accept unvaccinated children and being exposed to that many people every day would worry me too much anyway.

I don't think I would! I would try to get some additional unpaid leave or try to have family watch the baby.

@MamaMoose: @Smurfette: We have no one here who could watch the baby! It makes me sooooo sad. I was so sad leaving DS at 8 weeks, leaving DD at 6 will kill me. @Ree723: That is what I was wondering. Our pediatrician is VERY adamant about not bringing infants ANYWHERE...no church, nothing until they are 8 weeks. I am afraid she will freak out on me when I have this conversation with her...no idea how it will go over. @littlek: all my leave is unpaid except two weeks since I just had a baby last year. boo!
it's weird because our daycare accepts newborns at six weeks old but it is standard here for newborns to not get shots until 8 weeks.

@matador84: Would it be an option to hire a nanny for a few weeks? When are you due? Depending on the time of year you might be able to find a student on break. Perhaps a postpartum doula would either want the extra work or might know someone who would be able to fill in for a few weeks for you. Do you have any friends with a nanny or who stay at home who could help out? I am sorry you are in such a crummy position and I hope it works out for you!

@Cole: We live in a small town and there aren't many options. I don't think there are even any doulas here because I tried looking with my first pregnancy. It really stinks!

Usually pediatricians will be willing to do IZ's a little early.

No-my friends baby started daycare that early and a week later they were in the ER for a fever and cold and stuff. I would really try to swing a nanny for a month
But if you don't have a choice, you don't have a choice

Genuinely curious as I took my newborn all over the place, but not day care, unvaccinated but how do vaccines help with cold and flu transmission. Or is the fear that they are going to get meningitis or whooping cough from one of the kids?

I'd be very wary of putting a six week old in daycare without shots - as a teacher I know how germs kids can be! I'm with a couple of the other bees - in New Zealand six week immunization is the norm, so I think that your paed should at least be open to the idea of early immunization.

I did. He's the youngest kid, you are relying on herd immunity at this point. All daycares here start at 6 weeks, first shots at 2 months. J will be 8 weeks next week and we still have 3-4 weeks until shots bc of the holiday.

I would not. As you were probably told, it is very dangerous for a baby to get sick prior to 8 weeks. I think sending him to day are will get him sick very easily!

We are getting the first vaccinations at 6 weeks here (standard practice), maybe you could get them a bit earlier? If not, I would either take time off or find someone who could nanny for a few weeks.

@matador84: my ped told me that the first shots are the I my ones they can do as early as 6 weeks, so maybe you can get them before you have to go back to work.
