well, I really really hate tile floors, so it is easy for me to answer all wood.

I don't think wood/tile will look any "less open" -- to me, walls/islands/counters do that. But I do think that having the kitchen tile will help define the room in an otherwise open floor plan. It will be more easily visible where family room ends and kitchen begins.

I like wood. I know it scratches and wears easier, but like @Alba4: said it's warmer, and it's softer. I realize I will only have little kids for so long but tiles make me so nervous if they fall and when they are learning to sit on chairs and such. Then again for older folks, with the risk of falls and broken hips- my mom opted for laminate floors that look like tiles when she redid her kitchen for this reason.

Wood everywhere! We have carpet/tile and I want to change it so bad.

Definitely wood but with the idea that it will need more care than tile. My aunt puts tile in all her rentals because it's so easy to care for. I grew up in a house with all tile and even though we lived on the equator, the tile was freezing all the time! I hated how cold it would get and we'd all be wearing slippers all the time everywhere! And we had a million carpets.

Although I have a friend who put in a stone floor with in-ground heat and it's so so so amazing. Her house fees like a spa it's amazing. Definitely a future dream of mine.

Also, my ILs just redid their kitchen and put wood in the kitchen, it looks great! They have a very open kitchen/living area as well.

Wood floors. Our kitchen has it too but I'd like to switch that to tile. And remove the carpet on the 2nd floor.

Wood throughout! We had wood in our old kitchen and it was fine, although we only had it a couple years so I can't speak to the long term. I hate having tile in our current kitchen.

I hate tile. It's uncomfortable to walk on, always cold, and grout in high traffic areas looks disgusting. Wood all the way.

Wood. The only way I would choose tile is if it was a beautiful natural stone like Travertine.

we have hardwood throughout our entire house (except for bathrooms and utility room). I really don't mind it in the kitchen. Sure it shows wear, but I vastly prefer it to tile, and in my mind, no tile to wood transition ever looks smooth. I put down two of the chefs mats under the hardest working areas (and coincidentally where I might spill stuff, at the island and at the sink). It sort of protects the floor and also helps my feet/back. As far as maintenance...I really don't have to do anything. Of course I wipe spills and pick up melting ice cubes, but I don't really go out of my way to do much else. I give it a good swiffer with some mild hardwood cleaner. I'm sure it would benefit from a good wax, which would also help to protect the wood. But grout drives me crazy and tile is uncomfortable. And it cracks and can break my stuff (I've had my wine glasses bounce off of the wood floor).

@yoursilverlining: @Mrsbells: We are talking about a full remodel and I have so many pins of dream bathrooms and kitchen, it's so pretty!

I love the look of seamless wood floors. We have wood throughout our living area including the kitchen and it flows so well. And we have had no problems with wood floors in the kitchen.

I personally like it all to be the same in an open floor plan. Whether thats all wood or tile. I think it looks choppy having some tile and some wood but some homes can make it work. I would rather have wood over tile. My last rental was all tile and it was so hard and cold. Wood just seems more warm and inviting to me. Our new home has all wood downstairs except tile in the guest bath and then carpet upstairs.

I would also choose to do just all one or all the other with an open concept floor plan like the one you described.

We redid our floors a few months ago and went with wood look tiles because our entire downstairs is an open floor plan where kitchen flowed into dining and living room spaces. I didn't like the idea of breaking up the flooring, didn't want wood in the kitchen, wanted the durability of tile, and we live in a warm climate (SoCal), so we went with tile.

Dark grout with wood look tile is the way to go because it mimics wood floors better, so grout hasn't been an issue. Here are our wood look tile floors... people can hardly believe it's tile!

@Mrs. High Heels: looks similar to what we put in our basement. People always think it is wood.

@Mrs. High Heels: I have the same! almost the same exact color as well, throughout my entire house including bedrooms. I hate carpet and when we moved in we had carpet throughout and some lame tile in the kitchen so we just changed the whole house. it looks great, however, it is pretty cold in the winter. I live in NJ so we do have cold winters here, and honestly if I could do it over, I would probably go with wood!

Floor heated tile, no question. If floor heating is not an option, then wide plank hardwood.
