My best friend is planning on starting a complete home renovation on a place they are buying just as she is about to have her first child. I have advised her to maybe rethink this as I think the first year with your baby is the hardest and she will be stressed out enough. What do you think?

@chopsuey119: they will potentially close in 30-60 days and that is exactly when she is due so then they are planning on starting construction soon thereafter.

I am only 19 weeks and I believe you! Having just had a few things done around the house, I have no idea how I would manage my first baby with a crew working full-time in the house (the crew was in our house for 2 weeks). There would be no retreat from it, so to speak. That stresses me out just thinking about it.

OMG that was totally me! I don't know what we were thinking but we bought a house and started renovations when I was 36 weeks pregnant. Well lo and behold, my water broke and I delivered my LO at 36 weeks right when we started renovations! It was cuuuhhrazzzyyy let me tell ya!

@MsLipGloss: at least she will not be living there but she said it will take up to 1.5 years to complete! why even renovate? build a new house! i am sure she will run into so many more problems renovating an old, run down place.

@andrea: No, we weren't living there at the time. We just bought it and decided to do the renovations before moving it. The renovations lasted 2 weeks but then I had to stay away from the house for another 3 days to air out the paint. Then we had to move in and unpack! OMG it was a nightmare.

Weird, I was about to write this post myself! DH and I bought a new kitchen which conveniently arrives on my due date.... we'd expected to have it done before then and now we're trying to figure out how the heck we'll do this.
Having renovated the rest of our house ourselves, I definitely would want nothing to do full blown renos with a little one. So much stress, noise and mess.

I recently posted about getting our roof done, and how hard that was on our nap times. Just one little thing was bad enough, no way would I want to do more!

Hm. I don't know. We closed on our new house right around when we found out we were expecting. And the whole house is pretty much a gut renovation. But it's pretty much our dream house and we had always planned on gutting our dream house. haha.
Thankfully we have been able to stay at our current home while renovating the new house. My poor husband unfortunately has been doing 90% of the work. One man crew.Does she have the option of living somewhere else while renovations are happening at the new house?
My husband's cousin bought a house that needed renovations when they were pregnant. They just took it room by room.
I can understand it being hard to pass up on IF it's their "dream forever" home.

I would hate to be doing renovations when our baby is born! We are redoing the kitchen in the fall, but I specifically planned it for then because LO will be about 4 months old and hopefully it won't be as much of an inconvenience at that point.

@regberadaisy: she won't actually be living there but i think dealing with all of that at the exact same time as trying to figure out breastfeeding and sleep schedules sounds very stressful to me. she is already telling me that all the stress now while pre-planning isn't making her feel good while pregnant. i told her that if you add sleep deprivation on top of that -- it is really not fun. so far she has been getting good rest but that is going to change soon!

yea, I can only imagine! Not sure what we would have done if we found our new home when I'm near the end of my pregnancy. At least now the end is in sight for the renovations....for now. -
We just finished re-doing the basement... just the basement... and it was hard enough being pregnant. I can't imagine having done it with a newborn. I'm already dreading re-modeling the kitchen in a few years!
