i had a very empowering first labor even though i got pitocin after 19 hours, and then an epidural 4 hours after that. baby girl came into the world after 30 hours. i would love to try to go for an all natural med-free birth for the second labor, but i'm pretty sure if i am pressured into getting pit again, any chance of that is out the window! but i'd be totally fine with that.

Overall, I wouldn't change much about my labor and birth-- great mama/baby friendly hospital with flexible staff, a mostly empowering experience, and tolerable pain levels even towards the end. But I'd love to have a shorter labor (as opposed to a 45 hour one) and avoid an epidural. I ended up asking for one about 42 hours into labor to get some rest, and I so appreciated the couple hours of sleep it gave me, but i hated losing control of my legs.

If we have another I will have a csection. LO's shoulder was stuck and my OB said she would recommend a csection if we have more children. But I was happy with my epi. 27 hours and back labor I wasn't brave enough for med free!

I would do a repeat of my first l&d if I could! But I'm super nervous it's either a) going to be totally different and way longer or b) the same and way faster!

Things went pretty well the first time, but I'm hopeful it will be an overall easier experience since we've moved from NYC to Texas. In NY, I had to wait to get an epidural for hours because there wasn't a room available, and I had to share a recovery room with another mom/baby (or pay $900/night for a private room which I couldn't bring myself to do). I'm picturing Texas hospital rooms to be very large, luxurious and private.

@Anagram: I was BEGGING for an epi at only 2-3cm. Not sure if I just have a low pain threshold or what.

With my most recent l&d, I labored as long as possible at home before heading to hospital. Once in the hospital, I spent the entire time laboring in the tub until it was time to push. I did some practice pushes in the tub, but ultimately ended up delivering on the bed (per OB's request).
With this next baby, I would like to stay in the tub the whole time and push my baby out in the tub & have a water birth.

If there is another one (a big if!), I'd do the same as @yellowbird: said and be better prepared with some coping techniques in case the epi doesn't work! With my first, I had a dream labour and delivery - epi worked brilliantly, I felt absolutely nothing but was able to push DD out within an hour and had no complications. I assumed it would be the same for my second, but the epi only partially worked and it SUCKED having to cope with the pain when I had really only been prepared to deal with the pain until I got to the hospital and could get the epidural. Granted, the epi was working somewhat so I didn't feel everything, but it wasn't the dream epi of the first time and I was so unprepared for that!

I'd like it to not be in the middle of a ice/snowstorm so I don't have to worry about the car sliding off the road on the way to the hospital.

As I said in labor with #1, I will absolutely not have any more first babies. I'm hoping for much faster (but not too fast) and less tension with the hospital staff (hoping speed helps with that).

I'm not having a doula this time (also hoping that helps with hospital staff tension) and I plan to ask my doctor at my next appointment what the hospital guidelines are for midwives/OBs wearing face masks. It really bothered me that I never saw the midwife's face, couldn't read her expressions, and couldn't hear her. I know that was because she didn't get the flu shot but I want to understand if I need to expect the same this time around.

I am super happy with how my actual birth went (labored at home, med-free birth, doula and midwife-assisted), but I was supposed to give birth at the birth center and ended up transferring across the street to the hospital because of high blood pressure. Next time we are going to plan on a hospital birth (to avoid the possibility of a last minute transfer, and also because I liked being able to stay overnight which isn't an option in the birth center). Otherwise, I hope everything goes the same!

I was induced and had an epidural pretty early on. The problem was is I didn't dial up the epidural enough during delivery so it was awful. I'm not sure what it would have been like without an epidural, but it was the worst pain of my life. Next time, I'll make sure the epidural is turned up so I don't have to feel that again! I also would want to avoid being induced. I was given the choice to be induced or not because of very mild hypertension (which totally freaked the doctors out, but I'm sure wasn't a big deal, it was high because I was nervous). I was so uncomfortable being pregnant that I agreed to be induced. I hope next time to go into labor naturally.
