Unfortunately my DH noticed that a significant amount of pain pills are gone. We had leftovers from my birth, his broken arm and my hurt shoulder. I like to hang onto extras in case of an emergency- like when DH broke his arm we had something on hand right away. I'd say at least 40 pills of Oxy & Vicodin are gone we had them in the kitchen cabinet. We can't nail down an exact time. But it's been about a month since either of us took them. We had a party with about 40 people a month ago, have house cleaners (the same people each time) and most recently a crew of three to work on our chimney. I vote just put the remaining pills in our safe and let it go but DH is very upset, I think trying to find out who did it will make business owners defensive. I trust my cleaning crew. Overall it just feels really shitty. Are you on team look into it or team let it go?

So...I think my answer is different based on the people who could be "suspects". Since none of yours present a risk to you or your family I'd probably let it go in this case.
If for example you had babysitters or a nanny on that list - someone who could have a problem that ultimately affected my family - I would be more inclined to look into it more!

Since you don't have someone living with you as a suspect or someone caring for children, I'd just lock them up and let it go.

That sucks. I agree with @Mrs D. If it's not putting your family in any danger, I would say let it go, unfortunately. It sounds like you have had to many "random" people around to look into it. The person who took them isn't going to fess up and you will end up just offending 40 of your friends.

Ugh, super uncomfortable. I agree with other posters... I likely wouldn't start questioning people, but I'd be keeping a very close eye on things for a while...

Agree, I wouldn't say anything because there is no way of knowing who did it and it doesn't seem worth it to potentially accuse such a wide variety of people. Personally, I'd put my money on someone at the party. I just feel like workers you hire would be less likely to do something so foolish that could cost them their jobs. But who really knows? That sucks, I know it feels terrible for someone to do that in your own home

Yeah, I mean I want to trust everyone in my home. When M broke his arm we moved them from an upstairs bathroom to the kitchen for easier access. So I think it was naive of us to be so trusting. The only caretakers here without us are both of our moms which I don't suspect it all

I would let it go because it seems impossible to actually figure out who did it. That just really sucks though.

Now M is saying with 100% certainty that it was after our BBQ. But I'm not convinced. I think it would really suck to have it be a friend. We talked further and he is going to let it go.

@youboots: This recently happened with us, too. Difficult because we had also just hosted a large party with a lot of guests we didn't know before the party, and we also had cleaning people and contractors working on the house. Really disturbing, but we've moved on to lock it up and let it go since there's no good way of tracking down who stole them.

Id let it go, unless I suspected a family member, in which case I'd ask around a little more out of concern for that family member's well-being.

I don't think you have any choice but to let it go. I mean, unless someone confesses, what are you really going to do? Even if you accuse every party who could have taken it, that doesn't get you anywhere.

No one will ever admit to it so the only way of discovering the truth is by putting decoy pills in the bottle and set up a camera with a clear view of the bottle. That is a lot of extra work so I would personally lock the remaining pills in a safe and call it a day. It was most likely from a party where people were more anonymous but of course you want to know if you need to fire someone!

That's really violating. I'm sorry! Regarding the party, I am sure it's hard for you to think it was anyone at the party - as it was close friends for the most part. My first thought would be workers, but I'm biased based on past personal situations, which isn't fair. I say make a little space in your safe, and make it SOP to lock up when you're hosting anyone or out of town. Again, this sucks - I'm sorry!

I think it would drive me nuts not to know who it was. I wouldn't ask but I would figurr out a way to catch them. Maybe a nanny cam if you already own something like that.
ETA: knowing who I could rule out would ease my mind, too. Or else I might judge sometime unnecessarily.

I agree that since it doesn't seem to be anyone who will affect your family, I'd let it go. I know what you're saying about having access to the pills as needed- some people in my family are that way but personally it makes me nervous to have them around. I had a bunch from my c section and we took them to a local drug drop off. I'm not particularly paranoid about anyone I am just cautious about them in general. If any workers ever snooped around my house they'd be bored so I hope that would discourage further snooping.
