Xander bumped his head pretty hard on the corner of the Zany Zoo and instantly had a pretty big goose egg. We tried to ice it, but he wasn't a fan, and now he's in bed. Should I wake him up every so often or anything to make sure he's okay???

Is he sleepy when he shouldn't be? Did he lose consciousness? Is he acting normally? Did he vomit?
If the answers are no, no, yes, no, then you're probably ok.

Did he seem normal after the bump?
My LO bonks his head pretty often and has had a few goose eggs. As long as he seems normal, I don't worry.

My LO (8 months) just started bumping his head. I don't remember all the details, but our pediatrician's instructions have been to wake him up every two hours for the first eight hours after the injury. We are supposed to call the doctor if he is acting strange, is inconsolable, or throws up more than twice.

@NurseMommy: Well it happened right before bedtime, so he was already tired, so I wasn't sure how to judge that! He cried when it happened, but seemed okay after. Then hated the ice pack. No vomiting and he didn't lose consciousness, but he went to bed really easily (though sometimes he does, so this isn't totally strange).

@Applesandbananas: He seemed normal, but it was right at bedtime, so he went to bed and I know excessive tiredness can be a sign of a more serious injury, so it was hard to judge!

My aunt is a paramedic. She told us that even though it looks bad, as long as he doesn't have any signs of more serious injury, he should be fine. Our LO fell on her tile floor and immediately a big goose egg popped up. She told us since its just bone right under the skin there really isn't anywhere for the swelling to go except out. Unlike a bruise on an arm or leg where the muscle is pliable and the swelling can stay inside.
It's still scary though! Hopefully you all sleep ok tonight!

@Adira: I'm having a very similar evening to you! C fell and bonked his head on the edge of the wall. Almost instant goose egg! He was okay after a good cry and some snuggles. Played normally in the bath and we are doing bedtime now (nursing). C would not have liked an ice pack either!

My LO has had several goose eggs and it's been no big deal. If it wasn't a fall from high up or falling off something moving fast, then it's probably a normal bump. As long as he didn't lose consciousness or vomit he's probably fine. I never woke up my LO but would just check on her at night and make sure she was still breathing and that she didn't vomit in her sleep or stop breathing.

@cmomma17: Awww, sorry you're having a similar night! Sounds like your little guy is probably okay! I wish mine had bumped his head earlier so he had more awake time for me to really evaluate him!
@sandy: Thank you!! I was reading somewhere on-line that said I didn't need to wake him up either, but check his breathing and skin color and stuff, so I'll definitely be doing that tonight!

When R fell and spilt her lip open, the nurse on call said to keep her up for an hour after it happened. Make sure she was acting normal and all. Then wake her up 2-3 hour after she was asleep and make sure she was ok. She woke up screaming on her own so luckily I didn't have to wake her

My ped says head bumps and goose eggs are just part of being a kid - and they often happen right before bed because a tired kid = an uncoordinated kid.
She also said that it's when there is no swelling that you need to pay closer attention - swelling/goose eggs are totally normal, but no swelling could indicate that the brain absorbed the injury.

I didn't end up waking him up overnight, but I did get up every 2 hours to check on him and make sure he was breathing, didn't vomit, and his color looked normal. Everytime I got up, he was in a new position in bed, so I knew he'd been moving around, which is good. And he's got a nice bruise on his forehead, but seems to be acting completely normal, so I'm feeling good!
