I don't know why, but I'm pretty shocked...yeah, they took a long hiatus but I didn't actually think they'd quit for good... Did you??

I'm not really surprised. I felt like they wouldn't return to the blog after the break, but who knows. I think they could have gone about it a better way.

@avivoca: yeah, the whole way they went about it was weird. Plus, I can't imagine being in the position to just up and decide to quit my job suddenly.. But if they're in the financial position to do that, then good for them I guess!

not surprised. i bet they had other opportunities from their blog-fame, and they seemed sort of *over it* with their blog.

I'm not surprised. I sensed for awhile they were getting fed up with the whole thing. I think they've been considering it for awhile.
And I'm guessing they've already found other jobs, they were probably looking into other jobs before they took their break.

I honestly feel like after they sold their second house that their hearts weren't in it anymore. My guess is something came up in their personal lives that pushed the decision. It seems as though this has been a lucrative career for them (I'd love to have sponsors 'pay' me to fix up my house and blog about it ), and for both of them to leave it abruptly is a bit odd. In the past they usually were pretty thoughtful in how they shared information, so this ending seemed to come about suddenly. I hope they're okay, and are on to greener pastures that make sense for them.

I'm not surprised really, but I'm curious what they plan on doing now since the blog was their primary source of income. Big life change!

I'm a little surprised that they didn't wait for their second book to come out. Seems like it will be a little harder to market the book without a blog.

@Pancakes: That was the only surprise to me - I figured they'd wait till the book came out.
I would guess that John's had an outside job for a while...

I hope they periodically post updates to their current home in the House Tour section. I didn't read their blog until house #3 and I was looking forward to seeing all of the renovations & decorating.
They used Ikea alot, do you think they were a sponsor?

@Pancakes: I agree
@tinyperson: I thought that for awhile too.
Not shocked at all. It has been going down hill for a while now.

I guess I'm not surprised, like @ChiCalGoBee: said, it just felt like their hearts weren't in it anymore.
I'm just kind of saddened by it all. I felt like their blog kept me motivated to work on our house and it is really the only blog in my blogroll that really represented where DH and I are in life and how we approach renovation. (ie. trying not to hire anything out we don't have to, working within a relatively small budget, doing home improvement with LOs around, posting in real time) There are other blogs that I enjoy reading, but I find that they hire out a lot of the work that could be done yourself, end up using materials/pieces that are way out of our budget, or boom, post a finished room without all the details that go into getting it there.

I'm not surprised they wanted to quit. I'm surprised how they went about it. Their blog is a huge asset, and I think they should have consulted someone in PR to make the transition smoother.

I'm sad that they ended up making this decision (for selfish reasons) but I kinda had a feeling this was going to happen when they announced their break from blogging.

I'm sad. I like them and I want to read more family updates.

I'm not surprised at all. I think it was the right move.
@Pancakes: They have such a huge following and i think being off the blog will make people want to buy their book more, and even go see them during their book tour.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: No, they're pretty transparent about that stuff. They just really like IKEA.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Pancakes: That's true. I'm sure they thought about how quitting the blog would affect the second book. Though even though they aren't blogging, they did say they would keep the site up. I follow them on FB, so they could still use their site and other social media to market the book.

@TemperanceBrennan: I think they took a break to see if they would find motivation to continue the blog. Kinda like .. "oooh we should blog about that" during the course of their day. But I think they never got that during their month off. So they decided for good to just leave the blogging world.
I actually liked their blog. sad to see them go. But happy for them and their new lives. I'm sure they're going to love not having to justify every purchase and every decision they make.
honeydew / 7444 posts
@aegie: I was thinking about that too - how stressful it is when EVERY single purchase/decision is scrutinized by thousands of people on a daily/weekly basis!!
pineapple / 12053 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: I agree. I'm surprised that they're done done. I would have thought they could have made the transition smoother and not so abrupt as to lose fans. They could have possibly kept people on board and used that popularity for other projects.
That said, it sounds like their hearts weren't in it anymore and I can't imagine carrying that burden when it's your life/home you're blogging about.
