My water broke on its own at 5am, after I had gotten back in bed after using the bathroom. It was a very slow trickle.

I chose "other" because although my water gushed all over the hospital bed while I was getting my epidural, it apparently did not fully break because my OB then broke it (or the rest of it, who knows) with that crochet needle thing.

My broke on its own. I woke up at around 7am and was just laying in bed for a moment when I felt a small "pop" and then noticed a trickle. I went into the bathroom to check and it started coming out a lot faster once I stood up. We went into the hospital about an hour later and they confirmed (and by then the contractions were pretty bad).

Unexpected, middle of the might, pop, gush, baby born 30+ hours after

    Both!

With #1, it gushed when I bent over to pick up a pen. No contractions until about 2 hours later, so we finished watching a NCAA game, I finished work, and we put away the Christmas tree, then active labor hit hard..

With #2 they broke it about 15 minutes before I started pushing. I had been walking around at 4cm for a couple weeks. It sucked that I was in mild labor for long, no idea when to go in for the real deal and was about to get induced for high blood pressure when active labor hit.

Mine had excellent timing! I was sitting in triage and my midwife was in the middle of telling me that it was still early labor and she didn't want to admit me yet, to go back home and rest for awhile. I wanted to kill her because my contractions had been steady and getting stronger for 12+ hours already, I lived an hour away, and I was in pain damn it! Well, as she was finishing her sentence and went to help me off the table...suddenly the floor was drenched with a combo of my water breaking and my bloody show. Yeah, she changed her mind. 10 minutes later and it would've broken all over the seats of DH's brand new car!

@swurlygurl: my water broke on its own both times! But both times, it was more like a slow trickle and not a huge gush like they show in the movies. Luckily I had a pantyliner on both times so it captured the initial trickle, then I changed into a full on pad to catch the rest.

The first time my water broke, I was in bed trying to take a nap (around 5:30 pm), the second time I was in the kitchen cooking, and it was around 4:30 pm! Both times, my contractions didn't start until 2 hours after my water broke.

First time I was induced and had my water broken.

Second time I was in early labor for 24 hours. Had just gotten home from a mw appointment and was given a sleeping pill when I had 3 monster contractions and my water broke. Awesome timing.

Mine broke in triage as they were about to send me home. I was stuck at 3cm, but was having intense contractions. I felt a pop, and then the water gushed out. More trickled out for a couple hours after, and I had to change my gown a couple times. So glamorous!

I'm hoping it breaks on it's own again this time around so I get a golden ticket into labor and delivery!

The first time it broke while I was sleeping. I felt a pop then felt the gush. And the gushes kept coming where even a pad couldn't contain it. Contractions started an hour later.

Second time the midwife broke it after I've been having contractions for a couple hours. Then went from 7-10 cm in 45 min after that!

My water broke on its own, but I was already in the hospital. The doctor actually offered to break my water and speed up delivery, but I'm so glad we said no because shortly after I declined they realized I was GBS positive (my test results had gotten lost) so I was able to get antibiotics before pushing. Very fortunate turn of events. Water broke after the second bag of penicilin was administered, about 30 minutes before I started pushing.

With my first child it broke while I was asleep at 11pm. I wasn't even positive, I just had some blood and fluid in the shorts I was wearing. Since I was 40 weeks though I went to l&d. Contractions started less than 30 mins later and I deliever 2.5 hours after my water broke.

With my second child, I had really intense contractions and my water broke on the way to hospital. It was SO loud and and a HUGE flood of water. I was 37 weeks and delivered maybe 10 minutes after my water broke.

I was out to lunch, broke right after I finished eating in the middle of the place. And not a little trickle, a HUGE gush lol.

    Both!

#1 It's a long story but after five days in the hospital my Dr. agreed to let the attending Dr. break my water because it obviously wasn't happening on it's own. I was 35 weeks and it was a military Dr. vs. civilian hospital.

#2 I was induced one day after my due date and the Dr. decided to break it, my contractions ramped up immediately. It was a circus, the nurse was changing the bed and ripped my IV out, so there was amniotic fluid flooding the room and blood was gushing out of my arm! It kept gushing for what seemed like ages! I was pushing 1.5 hours later.

#3 The Dr. was on her way up to break my water and it broke on it's own. That was something I never thought I'd experience, strange feeling!

For me it was an incredibly slow trickle starting at 40 weeks exactly. It was 2 days before I decided I had better get it checked out - before that I kinda just thought I must have been a bit clammy! By the time I got to the hospital and they confirmed it had been over 48 hours with no sign of contractions and so they wanted to induce immediately. About 4 hours or so into the induction I thought I had peed everywhere, but looking back it must have been the waters fully going as I had lost very little fluid up til that point.

I was stalled at 4cm for a few hours and my Dr. broke it. I went from 4cm to complete and ready to push in an hour after that. So I know if it breaks on it's own next time I better haul ass to the hospital!

my water broke after about 7-8 hours of active labor (18 hours total for labor so less than halfway in). we labored at home until then and I had juuuust decided to try a position with a leg up on the back of the couch. I remember wondering if we should have put down puppy pads. answer was yes - water broke immediately upon the next contraction and soaked the couch. poor DH had to come home and take all the slipcovers to the laundromat when LO was 1 day old!

Mine broke on its own at 34 weeks. I was planning a wedding shower for a friend with her mom and moh (I barely knew either of them) I had already gone to l&d once and had been told it was just urine (nice) so I was embarrassed to say something because it was a slowish trickle. But by the time I got to the car to leave it was more obvious and my ob told me to come in. I drove myself to the hospital and started having painless contractions on the way. They started really hurting about 2 hours later once all the water had finished trickling. But at least it didn't happen that day at school. I was a 5th grade teacher and my water breaking in front of a bunch of 10 year olds was my biggest fear!

First time I thought it broke on the bathroom floor a few hours into labor but it actually just sprung a leak and then broke in the birthing tub way later during a contraction and scared the living crap out of me.

Second time it woke me up at 5:09 am with a huge gush, thankfully dh was still at work or he might have drowned

I woke up in the middle of the night and RAN to the bathroom. It was like I knew it broke, but none of it got on the sheets or anything - idk. Contractions started immediately, but didn't hurt for a few hours, two hours after that I was ready to push!

@cyndistar3: Hahaha - I love your drowned comment!

Mine broke at 29 weeks and I didn't realize it had broken until the next day when I went into the hospital to be checked out. The night that it broke I felt like I let out a little pee and it happened a few more times over the next several hours. When I went to l&d they confirmed it and I was in the hospital on strict bed rest for the next 7 days until I went into labor. A was born 1 day shy of 31 weeks.

i woke up at 830 am to go for a walk with my GF. after i went to the bathroom, i was pulling on my leggings and my water broke all over my pants/the floor. luckily i was on the hardwood and not our rug. it gushed two more times when i went to put on shoes, so i opted for sandals the last time. contractions didn't start for another hour or so. i walked 2 miles to breakfast, labored at home for another hour and a half, went to the hospital and she was born within 2.5 hours of our arrival there.

Lo was born en caul! My water never broke! It's one of my favorite things about my labor-- the midwife placed a mirror at the end of the bed so I got to see and it looked like I was pushing out a crystal ball. I sort of wish we had a pic, though then again it'd be weird to have a pic of my vagina, lol

Mine broke after 18 hours of labor, right before I went into transition, and only 2 hours before DD was born. DH had just ran down to grab some dinner in the cafeteria and my mom was with me. When he got back he was so disappointed to have missed it breaking - lol!

Mine broke at home after 5 or so hours of contractions. I had a really strong one, and went running to the bathroom to throw up. My husband was peeking in the door and I looked up from having my head in the toilet and said "either I peed myself or my water just broke." Went to the hospital and it was indeed my water although I was only dilated to a pitiful 1.5cm. However, I was at 10 within 5 hours of my water breaking.

So crazy how the stories are so different and some are so similar!

@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: meh, my contractions didn't start until we got to breakfast (1 mile). The mile home was really no big deal even with super regular contractions! I really didn't think it was weird! Ha.

I felt / heard a pop at about 0530 in this morning and proceeded to spend the rest of the day "gushing" every time I got up to move. I'm fairly sure I went through more than one packet of maternity pads before we even made it to the hospital!

Mine broke on it's own. Was sitting playing with LO and stood up to go to the bathroom and felt like I had peed my pants. Had a pad on so it caught most of it, but it kept trickling out. I wasn't sure if it broke so I waiting a little before calling the MD. My contractions started at the same time my water broke and 12 hours later I was holding the little man.

One week after my due date I was a bit obsessed with the idea that my water broke without me knowing. Truth be told, I thought so because I dealt with a bit of incontinence at the end! My midwife assured me that I'd definitely know. The next night just as we were in bed I felt a gush and I popped up right away and told my husband excitedly! We were thrilled because I was over a week late and they were threatening induction. As it turned out my contractions never started and I was induced anyway.
