A Duggar in the news for something other than pregnancy...

@mrscobee: one of the magazines finally was able to get the police to release the report under the freedom of information act. Maybe they'd known for a while but didn't have proof unail they could get that

@mrscobee: In Touch filed a Freedom of Information Act request:

@travellingbee: @mrbee: That makes sense, but I wonder what tipped them off to know to file for that? Or did they just file for it hoping they could find something?

@mrscobee: There have been rumors about this stuff for years... check out that link for more on that! Pretty shocking that TLC may have known about this. I hope that wasn't the case!

@mrscobee: there's actually more to how people knew to file a FOIA. Someone related to the case had written a letter to the Duggars about the issue. The letter was tucked into a book by a Duggar and the book was then lent to someone and discovered. The person who discovered the letter brought it to the attention of media and so it goes. It would not have been known by the outside world otherwise.

Lies have a way of catching up with people.

@mrbee: That is crazy that TLC may have known about it!!!

@Mrs. Jacks: Yes, lies do have a way of catching up with people, and I'm a little surprised they wanted to put themselves in the spotlight and speak so freely against other groups (i.e. gay, etc.) when they knew their celebrity could end up bringing this horrible secret to light!

I've always liked their show despite having much different views on things. I find this appalling! I cannot figure out why the outside victims family only wrote a letter instead of contacting the police? Did I miss a reason?

I've been keeping up with this and just now commenting. I used to love the Duggars, then was indifferent to them, but this is the last straw. They've rubbed me the wrong way lately with their pro life and anti gay agendas, and then when they wouldn't let Jana go to college, but the way they covered this up and left their daughters high and dry? Those poor girls.

I didn't agree with their lifestyle necessarily, but I've always been more to live and let live because they seemed like wholesome people. But I can't support them anymore.

every family has a dark secret or two, and you can't expect Christians or anyone to be perfect. People make bad choices, especially young people. But they handled this poorly, and at the expense of the victims. Their girls are already oppressed and this is just heartbreaking that they didn't protect them. Sexual abuse can't be glossed over.

ETA: reworded some things. Came out wrong.

@mrscobee: Brings the word hypocrisy to mind. I'm also always fascinated by all the Republican law-maker men who get caught with another man. I wonder how they can compartmentalize themselves so extremely? It makes me sad for them and the families they destroy in the process.

  12. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@cheesetomywhine: If the victims family also shared the same belief system as the Duggars they may not have wanted to make it public. "Pray it away" or whatever.

    That's just my guess though.

@artsyfartsy: I don't expect ANYone to be perfect, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, or otherwise. Child molestation isn't a mistake. It's a calculated cruel attack.

I hope the show gets cancelled indefinitely. I hope the girls he attacked get the support, love, and counseling they need. I hope Josh gets arrested and placed on the Sex Offender registry. I hope the Duggars lose all their funding and that people stop giving a shit about anything that comes out of their bigotted mouths.

@Mrs. Jacks: Agree, lots of parallels to those lawmakers. It is so sad how people can twist religion to end up just ruining the lives of themselves and those around them. I just read @mrbee: 's article with the timeline and can't believe the level of cover up. I mean, I knew it was bad, but it is soooooooooooo bad. I can't believe they went to such great lengths to protect their son, and didn't really care about the effect on those girls! So awful! I think they are done now. I don't know how anyone could take their family or show seriously. They've made a complete mockery out of themselves.

ETA: I guess what I said was stupid, because there are plenty of people defending them. Lots of stupid in the world!

  16. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@littlebug: You're right. I worded that poorly. It's an unforgivable crime, but I was mostly speaking against the arguments I've been seeing defending him on other sites using those statements.

    @travellingbee: This is pretty hilarious -- http://gopdigsduggars.tumblr.com/

I think the whole problem with "he made a mistake" is that

    1. Sexual assault is not a mistake. It's a crime against a child.
    2. His family covered it up. Telling a state trooper (who is now in jail for child porn) is NOT reporting it to authorities. They only "cooperated" with authorities after some one ELSE reported it (go Oprah producers!).

Also, for those who don't know what I mean about the extreme purity culture and quiverfull movement, these links have a lot of info. Just to be clear that I'm not saying this sort of thing is the natural result of mainstream "wait till you're married" teachings!

This reminds me so much of a family in my town growing up. They weren't quiverfull but wore their Christianity as a symbol of their superiority and righteousness. I went over to their house once briefly as a teenager and peaced out quickly because the dad kept bringing up our 'purity' and I didn't want an old man to keep making sexual comments to me even if they were veiled in the word purity.
Their son started exposing himself in high school to random girls and when they started asking about him it turned out he was molesting his younger disabled sister. The parents knew and we're trying to 'help' him by occasionally having him talk to a pastor or something and just looked the other way as the problem continued.
Not that there weren't a lot of odd kids in high school but that kind of upbringing seems to bring out a different sort of perversion

@travellingbee: Oh my god, that article is infuriating! "They were open and honest about it with the victims and authorities..." Yeah, I bet they talked at length with their daughters about how their brother sexually assaulted them. And PS - telling a policeman with whom you have a personal relationship who took that information nowhere and was then arrested and jailed for child pornagraphy? Doesn't count as being "open and honest." "The victims wanted to leave it in the past..." The victims were NEVER considered!!! ARGH! Makes me ragey!

@BlueWolverine: the state trooper and even clergy from their church are considered mandated reporters in Arkansas. They should have reported it instead of covering it up.

"I doubt that Fayetteville parents would stand for a law that would endanger their daughters or allow them to be traumatized by a man joining them in their private space. We should never place the preference of an adult over the safety and innocence of a child."

Found this quote Michelle did for a phone recording that was used to oppose a bill to let people who are transgender use whichever restroom they choose. Ironic.

@artsyfartsy: I remember hearing about those robocalls! I was disgusted by the message regardless, but in light of the fact that she was basically harboring an abuser WHILE she was saying stuff like that? Unreal!

I had to stop reading comments because I can't believe how many people are still defending these people. Come on.

I've always given this family the benefit of the doubt, but this just makes me angry for those girls. I wish everyone (not on here but on fb and elsewhere) would realize how horrible this is.

So this has brought up some discussion between DH and I. In situations like this (and not just for famous people like Josh Duggar), what should the response be besides obvious things like reporting to the authorities and taken every precaution to keep victims and potential victims safe? Should someone never be hired because of something like this that occurred as a young teenager? Should someone lose their job over it?

  37. travellingbee

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

@coopsmama: I don't think I agree with felons or other convicted criminals never being employable. All that does is breed more crime because they can't do anything legal to take care of themselves. I realize he isn't convicted of anything but as an admitted child molester, he certainly shouldn't be allowed to work with minors in any capacity and his job was a joke considering his past.

@coopsmama: Those are some good questions. I have read the comments that he should be a registered sex offender. I actually think that had the crime been reported, he would not have been required to register, given that he was a minor at the time (unless he was tried an convicted as an adult). I think if found to be true, he should have been sent to legitimate counseling (not counseling with their home pastor or off to do manual labor at a friend's house). And I believe every effort should have been made to keep him away from the girls, and it wasn't.

I don't know the answers to these hard questions though - as there are some people who believe that he is a monster and cannot be rehabbed (maybe this is accurate??).

Because of how the family handled the situation though, this has all come out in the public eye, and he probably won't be able to be hired in a professional type job. He didn't lose his job, but I guess felt pressured to quit because he could no longer represent the FRC in a manner that would serve them well? But, yes, right or wrong, now it will be very hard for him to get a job.

ETA: I agree with the poster who said his job probably shouldn't involve children - why take that risk?
