Charlie has a December birthday but the cutoff in New York is December 31st. Redshirting is not an option as kindergarten is mandatory the year you turn 5 in New York, unless you go to a private school (which typically has a September 1 cutoff).

If it were an option (as in an extra year of public school were provided), then I would definitely consider it. I think Charlie would do fine academically, but there really is a big difference between the kids that are a year older than him in maturity level. Right now he does have problems with listening and sitting in his seat at times. An extra year definitely wouldn't hurt! Plus he's very small so it would give him a year to catch up.

But it's not an option and one we never considered anyway.

If you had the option... would you?
