Who is dealing with a dairy intolerance or MSPI?

@ellewoods84: I got it at our local co-op, but I imagine you could find it at other stores in the natural section!

Also, LO is a so-so sleeper, and I do think it has to do with her MSPI. It takes her forever to settle, and she doesn't like lying down often. She also spits herself awake, like last night, and gets super, super gassy. Her naps are more a disaster than nighttime sleep.I dont think she is the worst sleeper in the world, buy I think she sleeps better when she feels better!

As for us, we had *intense* amounts of spit this weekend, and a lot of gas. Not a lot of screaming, but general unpleasantness. I'm not sure what is going on. I am still working on getting soy out of my diet, so maybe that is it? We also had her adjusted at the chiropractor on Saturday. Hoping this helps , too!

@gilmoregirl: how are you and B? I saw you are headed to the GI. I'm sorry, lady Thanks for the recipes , though-sounds yummy!

    @abbbydabbydoodlebug: exciting, good luck!

    @Pirouette: no, I haven't. Sounds amazing, though!

@Pirouette: she turned 6 months last week. I'm pretty sure she's teething too. She woke up definitely upset. It was like immediate crying, which happens when she wakes too early from sleep. But hopefully it wasn't because her tummy hurt. She has been eating normally and happily. I hope it's just s coincidence because that yogurt was SO. GOOD. Haha.

@gilmoregirl: I just bought the Oh She Glows cookbook! I've subscribed to her blog recently, too. Everything looks so good.

@LovelyPlum: That almond butter is soooo good! Also, poor DD! Is she still on reflux meds, too?

@ELLEWOODS84 My LO is a super crap sleeper, but I'm not sure it all has to do with MSPI (although I wish it did so it would fix itself!). She definitely sleeps a bit better now that she's not spitting up when we lie her down though! However, she still doesn't sleep for long periods

@LovelyPlum: okay I will look for it! I mean my daughter wakes up sooo many times at night screaming and I cannot help but wonder if it's the gas and what not bothering her. It's so sad because her eyes are closed and she's so tired but something is bothering her and she cannot settle or sleep.
@spaniellove: oooh awesome thanks! I need to make a trip to target.

@fussygal: well, I am glad your sleep is slightly improving! Our problem is that she stays up for a long stretch like from 11 to 2 am and seems like something is really bothering her. It's so sad for her and sucks for us.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: haha i bet it was! i'm hoping that it was teething, since that's inevitable anyway

  10. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@fussygal: she is, but we are working on the dosage. I also think she is teething, because she keeps comfort nursing and spitting in addition to vomiting.

@ellewoods84: do you give her anything for it? We have had good luck with gripe water and/or colic tabs for gas.

  12. ellewoods84

@LovelyPlum: hahaha oh yes. We joke we should invest stock in the company because we have used soooo much gas drops and gripe water. Doesnt seem to help her.

@LovelyPlum: B's doctor referred us to a GI when we saw him for his 4-month check last week. But the doc wanted B seen within two weeks and the next available appointment was not until the end of October. So I'm not sure what we do next. Over a month of no dairy and at least two weeks soy-free have made zero difference.

I don't mind eating an MSPI diet if it helps, but it is decidedly not helping and I'm getting frustrated.

@gilmoregirl: I am sorry that the diet isn't helping. That is very frustrating. I hope you can get some answers soon! What symptoms is your little man still having?

So I've had the yogurt the past 2 days and today and DD is having a really off day. At one feeding, she spit up twice (a pretty good amount, but not vomit amount) and she's taken only short naps today which hasn't happened in a while. Can't help but wonder if it's because of the yogurt? I'm curious about her poop and what it's like, but she hasn't pooped since Sun AM (she normally poops every 2-3 days).

What do y'all think? Could it be the yogurt?

  17. gilmoregirl

    persimmon / 1273 posts

@ellewoods84: really gross slimy green poop with blood in it. Maybe increased spit up? But I generally have a heavy spitter who is a happy spitter. It's primarily the poop.

@gilmoregirl: Poor thing. Maybe it's an egg or gluten sensitivity? My friend was gluten/dairy free because her daughter would projectile spit up with gluten.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: poor girl. How is she eating? The first signs for my guys are crappy sleep and no interest in nursing.

@gilmoregirl: That is tough. I unintentionally cut out wheat when I first eliminated the dairy and soy because I couldn't eat anything processed in the house. Things seemed to be improving and then I ate pasta one day and bread another and both times poop turned mucusy green again. So maybe you need to try eliminating other types of allergens?

I started my new diet about a week and a half ago and there has been huge improvement in the little guy's appetite and his poop is looking more normal. Today he seemed off - fussier than normal and not wanting to eat again and his last diaper had more blood I was so desperate for sweets that I bought a gluten-free cake mix that didn't have any soy or dairy ingredients listed but said may contain soy. Could that be the cause? The only other questionable thing I had was a salad on Saturday. I tried a couple bites of chicken that was supposedly fine. Just seems a little delayed for the reaction.

    nectarine / 2636 posts

@skipra: Usually gluten free cakes are ok with Dairy/soy, but it is possible. Maybe it had soy lecithin? My DD is usually ok with things that are labeled as "May contain" but maybe your LO(s) (twins?) is more sensitive?

She seems to be eating fine and is happy afterwards. And she just finished taking a 1 hour 20 min nap, so that's good! Maybe I'm just paranoid because I know I ate dairy and I'm looking at every little thing, thinking it could be it. Lol, ugh.

Quick question... Would you guys eat this?

  22. abbydabbydoodlebug

@Mae: yep! I would eat that! If you can find Rudi's or Sprouts bread, those are mspi friendly too.

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@gilmoregirl: sorry, I didn't see this. Poor B, and poor Mama When is your appointment?

@skipra: I'm glad to hear it was getting better, but how frustrating about today. I'm finding that when I've slipped, she will get better for a few days, then relapse, but not quite as bad. Buy we never had bloody poop, so I don't know about that

@abbydabbydoodlebug: your first update scared me. Glad she seems better!

@Mae: yes ma'am, I would! LO seems to do the worst with hidden butter, but shared equipment I don't worry about.

  24. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@skipra: it is so interesting that you say poor sleep and poor eating are your boys' signs. I wonder if that could be part of our sleep issue over here. We don't do a whole lot of it...

  25. Mae

@abbydabbydoodlebug: @LovelyPlum: thank you! I had chips and salsa with dinner-- yay haha. I still have no idea what I'm doing for food tomorrow since I did the grocery today and got a lot of stuff with soy (boo). But that is tomorrow's problem! I did look on Chipotle's website and it looks like my usual (sans cheese) is safe because they don't seem to use soybean oil. So yay for that #priorities lol.

I can't decide if I want to join this group or not lol. On one hand I do really hope that Fia's issues are the result of an allergy because that means we'd have a diagnosis and a solution and omg my baby might willingly eat!!! But on the other hand-- this seems hard! I'm going to be honest and say that if at the end of this elimination deal it appears she is allergic to both milk AND soy I will probably give up pumping and just go to bottle feeding. I don't think I can be so restricted with what I eat and maintain a quality of life-- especially since I already hate EPing so much. If she's just allergic to dairy (esp if I was able to have milk in baked goods and/or butter) I think I'll stick it out for maybe at least until 6 mo. We shall see!

  26. skipra

    pomegranate / 3350 posts

@LovelyPlum: just curious when you say there is improvement then relapse, does that mean there are no immediate signs? Or that you can tell right away and then it gets better but gets worse a few days later?
I initially started to suspect MSPI because DS used to be a great sleeper and then started to wake a lot at night. Like every half hour to hour. He has finally started to get a little bit better but is now used to sleeping in bed with me

@abbydabbydoodlebug: hope that it wasn't a reaction that you were seeing!

@Mae: I would eat that too

  27. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@skipra: is poor sleeping common with allergy babies do you know? Bc that would be a point against fia having an allergy. She might drive me batty with eating but girlfriend sleeps like it's her one true love (i mean-- relatively for her age. I was still up with her at 4 and 6 this morning).

  28. abbydabbydoodlebug

    nectarine / 2636 posts

@Mae: I am a total dairy and carb fiend. I always said that I could never go without dairy or carbs in my diet. And I'll be honest and say that I cried the whole day that I found out she was mspi. It was super overwhelming (she was only 2 weeks old when I found out) and it was definitely hard. That said, it is not impossible! You just kind of get used to it. The first 2-4 weeks are the hardest. Eating out sucks. I had to start cooking a lot more, but I'm definitely healthier in the way that I cook and eat and will probably stay that way. I needed to make a change anyway. There is a substitute for almost any food product. If you are trying to find something, just ask and hopefully someone will be able to help you!

And yes chipotle is awesome and only their tortillas have soy.

    papaya / 10343 posts

@abbydabbydoodlebug: thanks for the encouragement I guess I'll cross that bridge when we get there. I mean-- I will definitely think it through before deciding for sure. I just sort of feel like I'm a bit at the end of my rope. I already feel like I'm always scattered trying to take care of LO and EP (which I've been doing now for 4+ weeks and I still hate and is not getting less stressful for me) and keep up my part time work and look for a full time job and I'm home alone with her like 90% of the time bc my husband works full time and is in night school. And at some point something has got to give-- I think that might be my having to start cooking more or learning a whole new diet. especially since I only make half of what she needs anyways but we'll see!

Also, randomly-- for anyone who supplements with nutramigen (if there is anyone here).... I kept trying to figure out what it smells like and I figured it out. SELF TANNER. lol.

@LovelyPlum: @skipra: I think once I can get her to poop and check it out, I'll know for sure. She did this grunting sound earlier that was weird. Only the poop will tell the truth! Haha

  31. abbydabbydoodlebug

    nectarine / 2636 posts

@Mae: oh I totally get it and don't blame you one bit for feeling that way. It's totally ok to feel that way! My sil EP for the first 6 months and she hated it. I just hope you get this figured out ASAP!

  32. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@skipra: I was referring to spitting, mostly. If I slip, I know by the screaming and the spitting that she's had something that doesn't agree with her. Then I feel like the spitting will get better for a while, but maybe come back again before lessening? I've noticed that over the course of 2 weeks both times I slipped/gave in.

  33. skipra

    pomegranate / 3350 posts

@Mae: I don't know about the sleep thing. W used to wake up from bad gas I guess, throwing his legs up in the air and thrashing around, letting out some massive tarts. His doctor said gas would not wake him up but she couldn't see it. So I think it had to be the intolerance. G started to wake the same way. Who knows.
@LovelyPlum: thanks for clarifying. Maybe it was when we ate out. I'll just have to keep a closer eye on things.

So DD pooped this morning and it looked pretty normal. Although, its hard to tell now that she's eating solids. It was a little shiny, but her mucousy poop never went away, even after I was d/s free. So. I'm treating the bad naps yesterday as a fluke and I ate some cheese on my eggs this morning!

I wish I had splurged on some good cheese to try, but all we had was some shredded mexican blend that my DH uses. Lol. I'm having him pick up some better cheese on the way home to try.

Hope this works! If she's not bothered, I get to try ice cream next!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I am super pumped that this is going well for you -- both because I'm happy for you and I'm hopeful that my LO will grow out of whatever is going on soon! Good luck with the cheese and ice cream

    nectarine / 2636 posts

@gilmoregirl: Thanks! I'm really hopeful! I set my expectations up to be d/s free for a year or until she weans, so if she's ok at 6 months, that'd be a great surprise.

  37. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

    @abbydabbydoodlebug: yay for cheese!

True story: I just ate two soft pretzels for lunch because I didn't grocery shop with an eye towards soy free and the only things I had in my house that were soy free were cereal (which I had for breakfast), potato chips, tortilla chips, soft pretzels, and oatmeal (which I almost had but I didn't feel like anything sweet). Meh. lol

When LO wakes up I'm going to head to the grocery store and try to find some food to get me to the weekend when my mom will be here and I can give a little bit more thought to meal planning for next week.

Also I went to take my morning vitamins but I saw my prenatal has soy! Do you guys take a specific prenatal that is soy free?

We are getting in to see a specialist today so fingers crossed we can get some direction. We have to travel an hour to the nearest children's hospital and I am super nervous about everything. But trying to stay hopeful.

@gilmoregirl: lol! i had chips and salsa with dinner last night (with chicken sausage sans bun that was mercifully soy additive free). need to pick up more salsa! I was brainstorming last night what I could eat and I think I'm going to pick up a bunch of apples and bananas... I lived on apples and bananas spread with peanut butter during the first 3 months of pregnancy because I couldn't tolerate most other protein. I also used to eat triscuits all the time and i'm wondering if those might be soy free (the unflavored kind). although my fav way to eat them was with cheese and salsa... lol.
