Could he just be thirsty? Could you try water instead of milk?

With my older one, we had to wean him off the milk at night around that age. I started by just watering down his milk little by little until eventually it was just water. Now he just has a cup of water by his bed.

Ummm my 20 month old still nurses once or twice overnight, sooo I don't know where these people are coming at you saying your kid has to be STTN, every night!

Maybe you can give him some milk before bed?

Exact same as pollywog. My first would wake and I’d get a cup of water and a pouch after one year old and then she’d go back to sleep and it didn’t last long. 1-2 weeks around 15 months old. Both my kids stopped waking to breastfeed at 6 months and my first was weaned at 13 months. I’m fully expecting there to be some sleep wakings at some point with my youngest who is 13 months and I’ll plan to tackle it the same way. Sometimes I wake up hungry or thirsty and my toddler woke up crying for water last night. It happens! I’d continue doing what you’re doing with no hesitation if it were me.

I say follow your gut on this one.

At my LO's 9 month appointment, the pediatrician insisted she should not need any nutrition overnight, but it felt wrong to me. I tried to reduce night time breastfeeding. At her 12 month appointment, she hadn't gained weight, and he told me it looks like she DOES need it overnight, and I should give it to her. You can imagine what I thought.

I used to scramble an egg for my daughter before bed. So right before milk and teeth brushing

I fed LO1 overnight until 15 months. He was hardly eating solids and I can’t imagine what his weight and percentiles would have looked like had we stopped before he was ready to.

LO2 is almost 1 also and he still nurses multiple times at night.

I also found this graphic today that I remember referring to with LO1. I trust the source, but you always have to do what you feel is best for your LO.

@annem1990: at that age as long as you keep feeding him he will wake up out of habit and expect to eat. Just offer water instead and after a while he will accept that as the new normal and not wake up for it. He may still wake up but not to eat

@annem1990: In my experience when my LO did that he was possibly teething. He would wake up and I would nurse him, check his diaper, possibly tylenol (of in pain and directed by pediatrician). I always keep it boring . He could be hungry or it could definitely be other factors. I’m not an expert but it sounds normal and could also be a sleep regression... so much going on in their little brains!
