DH and I were late to the DA train and just finished season 3 last night. These questions probably have already been discussed.
1. Why are my favorite characters dying? I really think Robert should have been killed, not Matthew.
2. Does anyone else not trust Mr. Bates? DH and I think he's lying and that he's going to kill Anna one day.

@Weagle: Right??? on both counts! So many deaths!! I mean good grief. And yeah, with you on Bates, something about him just makes me go ickkkkk. I liked him at first but then we watched season 3 and I was like wait... wait... he's creepy!!

1. It sucks that some of the best characters have died. Totally agree. But, the actor who plays Matthew wanted off the show so that he could have an opportunity to try his hand at acting over here. In fact, one of my friends works at a college in Brooklyn and he's currently filming something with Liam Neeson nearby. Plus, he is/was doing a show on Broadway with Jessica Chastain, so he is doing other work now. I guess Julian Fellowes just couldn't think of a way to "write him off" that didn't involve killing him. As for Sybil, I have no idea why that happened! I'm still not over it.
2. Bates definitely has a touch of creepster about him, but he had better not kill Anna!

@Weagle: @Bookworm: He better not hurt Anna! Matthew's death broke my heart . . . could you imagine just having had your first child and then losing your husband? I bawled like a baby watching it!

I know, I was SHOCKED that they killed off Matthew, he seemed like such an integral character!! I saw that episode a few months ago, but it wasn't until last week when I read online that the actor who played Matthew didn't want to continue... BOO! I wish he had stuck around for another season or something, it's not like each season is 20+ episodes... just 6 or 7 episodes!!

I was disappointed to see Matthew die. Can't this family catch a break!? (I guess that would make for boring TV though... 
)
I've always liked Bates! I didn't think he was creepy until you all mentioned it... but now I can kind of see it!

I'm really annoyed about Matthew. They should have axed Robert. Or Branson (and left Mary w/ 2 babies to raise!).
I like what they did with Thomas' character.
I never considered it before, but, yes Bates is creepy!

The actors that played Sybil and Matthew both wanted off the show to pursue other projects.

I watched Matthew and Mary's last scene in the hospital multiple times because it was just so sweet and tender, and I cried every time! It's just not going to be the same without Matthew.
I also read o'brien is leaving too. Definitely not as big as Sybil or Matthew, but I feel like the cast is dropping like flies! And I hate adjusting to new characters, I hear they are introducing 6(!) new ones. Talk about first world problems!
Anna is my favorite, so bates better be good to her!

I am so sad about Sybil and Matthew. I, in some ways, hope that Branson and Mary decide to raise their babies together. Branson is dreamy. And, I think Bates has an evil streak, but I don't think he would harm Anna.

I was really sad to see both Sybil and Matthew die in this season. It was like baby = one parent dies. I also read after the fact that the actors wanted to pursue other projects.
I am another Bates fan. I like him and Anna together. They are sweet.

Sybil & Matthew were my two favorite characters. I was pissed. I think I cried like every episode there at the end... totally depressing. And, I love Bates! I think he and Anna are so sweet together. If one of them dies I will revolt.

I think they're intentionally making Bates mysterious.. and we're going to find out he's really a good guy in the end (like they did with his wife's murder etc.). Anna is one of my fav's too!!

I would love a Branson/Mary combo! Opposites attract, right? They have to keep Branson around to go along with the "the world is changing" theme.

I like Bates. He's not a one dimensional character. Did we ever hear much about his life before Downton? It's been a while, but when he first came on (season 1), I thought he was intentionally vague about "bad things he did in his past". He was in the army wasn't he?
As for Lady Edith, I think she will end up with the editor. She was already ok with being the subject of gossip because of the age difference. I think she is hesitant because of her family.
I'm sad about Sybil and Matthew, but Matthew annoyed me sometimes. I'm curious to see what happens next season but we are going to have to wait awhile.

@MsLipGloss: hmm... I don't know. She's a tough one. I do feel sorry for her, so I hope she does have a happy ending. I don't think it will be the married with 2 kids type of happiness though.

I like Bates! I was really happy that he was able to stick up for himself in prison. Made me less scared for him.
I wasn't a fan of Matthew, so I wasn't that sad. He now seems like a pawn that was used to get a proper Crawley heir.
I was soooo sad about Sybil. I loved her and couldn't believe she died.
.@crabbabs: I don't think Edith will end up with the editor. But perhaps he'll kill his wife to clear the way for him and Edith. And then Edith will find out he's a murderer after she marries him. But I don't think she'd become a mistress. She's too much of a "lady".
@MsLipGloss: Agreed! Mary's way more fun and gets into way more trouble as a single lady.
And no way Mary would get with Brandson. Remember how long it took her to appreciate Matthew because he was a "working man"?

I wasn't that sad about Matthew once I got used to the idea. I mean, it's sad for Mary but I was never a huge fan of Matthew.
Sybil, on the other hand, was devastating! The only good thing about her dying is that Branson seems to have gotten hotter in his angst.
I don't think Bates is creepy, but I totally thought he was going to die in prison. Maybe next season? As long as Maggie Smith doesn't leave, the show wouldn't be worth watching without her.

We also haven't discussed Rose. Surely she will stir up some trouble. Cora's going to be giving lots of side eyes next season.
