I don't live in the 'burbs so take this with a grain of salt, but I think the main reason a double stroller would be helpful is if you walk a lot--like if you lived in the city. In the 'burbs, I imagine driving a lot, in which case a double stroller isn't really necessary--the older one can walk for short periods of time, or you can babywear for short periods of time. I do think having an inexpensive double is probably helpful for trips to the zoo, vacations, etc.

I don't live in the burbs and I don't have 2, but I don't think I will get a double when the time comes. I will just have probably just use a buggy board. Maybe I will add a rumble seat to my stroller if I absolutely have to.

Nope, I'm sure you can get by without one. I use mine a lot right now but I'm still on maternity leave and I don't like baby wearing.

I don't have a second but I LOVE the sit and stand strollers. They allow the older kid to get on if they get tired. Inevitably at disneyland or the zoo, they will and I don't want to carry a 5 year old.

We also baby wear so that may help.

You can live without if you don't want to spend the money. I always take them out with the baby in the stroller and my older one just walks.

They want to walk when they're young, but then they realize they can just sit when it's no longer a novelty. Charlie always wants to sit while olive wants to walk.

I don't think it's a day to day necessity, but I would still get one for trips to the zoo, amusement park, etc. a double stroller also lets them both nap when you're out and about all day.

But get one used since you won't use it often.

My first wasn't a fan of baby wearing - I'm hoping that getting an Ergo for #2 (due in March about 21 months apart) might help. My plan is to keep both our single strollers (travel system/umbrella) as well as add one double. I live outside the city and walk to get the mail everyday but its on a busy road so we take the stroller and then walk to the park where DS can play and then get back into the stroller for the walk home. With 2 kids I want to have my bases covered. My double stroller budget is $300 or less and considering we don't need much else this time I'm ok with it. Even if its only used once a week for a year that's ok.

I think it depends on the person. For us, it will be a necessity.

I think in the 'burbs you can live without one since generally there is more driving than walking. When DH and I are together we actually prefer taking two single strollers over the double. (But we live in the city and I have to take the two kiddos by myself a lot and therefore I do need a double stroller because my back starts hurting if I have to babywear and push the older one for more than a short bit).

ETA: My answer is based off of having spent a month in the 'burbs with my in-laws.

Baby #1 is still on the way, but we plan to have 2 close together, so we got the b-ready because it can easily be a single or a double. I like having options :D.

My only thought is what happens if your toddler wants to run off or something - you might want to secure option of a second seat for the older child.

If it is at all possible to buy it used for cheap or even to borrow from someone local who has older kids now, I would try for that.

I'm still finding that I don't need one so I would definitely go cheap or used if you get one!

My LO is not a fan of his stroller, he'd rather walk, so I don't think there is much value in a double stroller.

I say I can't live without mine, but only because I walk a lot, and neither can walk (we live in a weird city/suburbia hybrid). I think that if one was older and the other a baby, you could totally get away with a single stroller.

I hope not! Mine will be the same amount apart as yours, and I'm hoping to avoid buying yet another stroller.

I'm planning to baby wear #2 a lot more now that I have an Ergo (didn't get one until #1 was almost a year last time) and hopefully if we are doing anything that really needs a stroller, I'll have another person with me so I can just take two singles.

When I found out I was pregnant with #2, I started having C walk more at the zoo, so we don't even need a stroller at the zoo anymore. It really depends. I'm a big walker especially when I feel like I need to get out of the house to clear my mind with two LO's. DD was content being worn so I could have had her in the carrier at all times and just pushed DS in the stroller (he was 3 when I had her but his legs would still get tired if we walked a long way or if he needed a nap I would put him in the stroller). But that got bulky and uncomfortable after awhile.

Also, by the time DD was 9 months - I really wanted to start running again so a double running stroller was necessary.

We did not need a double stroller since we mostly drive everywhere. We do have a double jogging stroller with a fixed front wheel so I would use that when I was in a pinch, but it's definitely not for every day use. And that's only when my husband is away and I need to walk the dog with both kids and the weather doesn't permit us to use the wagon. When LO2 was younger, I would just wear her. What we do have in the summer for going to the park is a wagon. They love being able to climb in and out of the wagon as they please. We use the wagon when we go on excursions like the zoo, apple picking, etc, too.
