Pretend for a moment that you just won a two-week all-expenses-paid vacation to a major city of your choice. And since we're pretending, the trip includes a travel nanny. Which city would you go for, and why?

I would pick Tokyo because it's farthest away and so expensive, and least likely to be a place I get to myself.

I picked Jo'burg but I wouldn't want to actually stay in the city. I'd want to get out and go to Kruger National Park! I'd also head up into Botswana to visit Chobe NP and the Okavango Delta, and then end up in Cape Town for a bit of a relaxation time before flying back to Jo'burg to fly out.
Hmm, that probably defeats the purpose of flying to Jo'burg doesn't it? In that case, I'd choose Tokyo as Japan is ridiculously expensive and I'd love to see it on someone else's dime!

I picked Tokyo because it's sooo darn expensive and if someone else is paying, I'm eating sushi all day every day! hahah
I would also just love to go back and experience the city on my own and soak in all the great food, fun clothes, and mix of old/new culture! Went in college with the family on a tour and I think it was very limiting on the experience!

i didn't want to skew the votes, but i'd pick tokyo too. there's always so much to discover there.
johannesburg might be my second choice, since i probably would never plan to go there myself. that trip would definitely include a safari in kruger park

Tokyo, the most expensive and furthest one. And Japan is awesome.

What, no one else for Copenhagen besides me? No Scandinavian enthusiasts? Gorgeous architecture, amazing breweries, the home of Niels Bohr and Kierkegaard? And to quote the ever-useful Wikipedia, "Copenhagen has repeatedly been recognized as one of the cities with the best quality of life."

I guess Paris since I live in Tokyo right now and I've never been to Paris yet.

I love, love, travel! (Since I write travel blog, I would hope so, right?) I would actually do two weeks in Cape Town instead of Jo'burg. I lived in CT for four months, and it is so beautiful and the areas around it are fun to explore (wine regions, the scenic Garden Route, possible whale watching). That said, if I was on someone else's dime, I would maybe pick Paris (well, because it's Paris) or Tokyo because of the expense.

Of those four, probably Paris, but if it weren't multiple choice, it might involve Italy, Australia, Hawaii...

Tokyo because I would love to go to Japan but it's so expensive! So all expenses paid would be awesome!

@DigAPony: I went to Copenhagen last summer; it's a beautiful city. Nice people too!
Of those cities listed, I think I'd pick Johhanesburg; but stay at a luxury safari park (hey, we're going on someone elses dine, right?!) I'd love to go to France, but not interested in going to Paris. If I could trade Paris for somewhere in the countryside, my vote might be different.

I picked Paris, I have always dreamed of going to Europe and never made it there.

If Johannesburg could actually just be "South Africa" and I could go on safari, I would 100% do that--we went there for our honeymoon and I am dying to go back. But the city itself was not something I have a desire to explore. Other than that, I would say Copenhagen! I studied abroad there for a semester and would love to take DH there!

wow that is really tough. i picked copenhagen because i hear it's just beautiful there. everything is designed! johannesburg was very close as well.
i've already been to paris and it's easy to get to from new york, and i'll have many opportunities to go to tokyo!

Paris because I've always wanted to go there when I lived in england but someow never got around to it.

Paris! Went there on our honeymoon. I love that city - we would live there if we could. I have family in Tokyo - it's a very cool city as well,

Johannesburg! I think the culture there would be amazing and the weather and the animals!!! I would honestly like to have
1 week in Paris as a 3rd anniversary/honeymoon
and
1 week in Johannesburg as a family vacation with our LO

Paris because it's closer, but if I could ignore the distance, then my vote would be Tokyo. I wouldn't recommend Copenhagen though: DH just had visitors at work from Beijing and they've never been ouside of China. They also visited Copenhagen and the first thing they mentioned was how dirty it is! It's exactly what I thought when I visited there 3 years ago and DH assumed I exaggerated. Totally not an exaggeration!

Tokyo is a good one. I would have to wait until I am not pregnant, though, in order to eat all the raw seafood.

Even though I love visiting new places, I would go back to Paris tomorrow in a heartbeat - it trumps everything for me...

@hilsy85: Same here. I want to go all over South Africa terribly.

Paris, because I love it there and I'm pregnant and want to eat yummy food all day long. Also I think LO would love it there.

Paris, because it is so centrally located that you can visit other countries in Europe too! Hello, Chunnel!
I want to go to Europe SO bad!!

I picked Tokyo as I have always wanted to travel to Japan. My 2nd choice would be like what @BKCaribBaby said - Cape Town instead of Johannesburg. We were fortunate enough to visit both cities last year and I would go back to Cape Town in a heartbeat.

I voted Paris because we got engaged there. we had the most amazing time and I Am dyyyying to go back!
But now I want to change my answer to Tokyo because I really want to go there and eat endless sush on someone else's dime, haha!

Oooh, Paris is fabulous--we did a 5 day in Amsterdam and 5 day in Paris over New Year's this last year (and got engaged in Paris!). I'd pick Tokyo. I've been fortunate enough to travel a lot, but have never been to an Asian country; I'd LOVE the chance!

@DIGAPONY i'm surprised at the few votes for CPH too. i lived there for a bit and loved it. i didn't choose CPH because two weeks wouldn't be enough!
@CRUMBS that's the first time i've ever heard anyone call copenhagen dirty. gray, maybe. but i don't remember it being dirty.
apricot / 423 posts
eta: i feel like copenhagen is about the same as tokyo in terms of being an expensive city. you can get really good food for cheap in tokyo, but you'd have to pay a little more just to get decent food in copenhagen.

sooo I asked DH for his opinion because I couldn't decide... he asked where Johannesburg was, he said "Germany? Australia? Russia?" and continued listing countries not even on the same continent... good grief...
I would looove to go to Africa!!
I don't know enough about the other cities, but DH said Tokyo so I'd go there too

I chose Johannesburg but I'd really rather go to Kenya and stay at Giraffe Manor.
