I'm curious how others feel about their 3.5 year old and stairs! Xander's bedroom is on the second floor and we just got rid of his crib railing so he can now get out of bed on his own. The bathroom is right near his room across the hall. Directly across from the bathroom is the stairs to the first floor. So basically the bathroom and his room are diagonal to each other.
Would you keep the gate at the top of the stairs closed at night? At 3.5, Xander's perfectly capable of navigating up and down the stairs on his own. But now that he can do middle-of-the-night potty breaks on his own, I'm worried about him falling down the stairs while half asleep. Thoughts?
My husband feels the same way as you do, and my response is that I don't see how having a baby gate to protect an older child is any different from having a newborn/toddler sleeping in a crib. In an emergency, how would they get out of the crib?
