My 3.5 yo just started stuttering a lot in the past few days. Anyone else have this happen?
He was a late taker and has been talking more and more and more, it's been great. Now all of a sudden a stutter out of the blue that is pretty noticeable.
Guessing it's a phase, but should we do anything to help him along? We aren't rushing him along. Nothing's really changed except that he's finally mostly potty trained.
A sentence he said 5 days ago normally is now being stuttered? So weird!!

During our most recent well check, the pediatrician said stuttering is really common for 3 and 4 year olds because their brains are processing so much quicker (than I guess they can even keep up with). We've definitely noticed it with our 3 year old.

Yup, D's been doing this, too, and our ped said the same thing as @AggieDaze: It especially happens when he's excited about something. I just try to remind him to slow down.

My 3 year old doesn't stutter but sometimes she'll say the first word of a sentence like 5 times in a row before she spits out the rest of the sentence. As said above I always assumed it's just because her brain is working faster than her mouth.

Ditto what @AggieDaze: @littlebug: said about the brain processing too fast for their mouths esp when excited. I also remind ds to slow down. It happened quite a bit at early 3, but I haven't noticed it so much anymore at a 3 yrs 4 months. I, too, thinks it's just a phrase.

@Truth Bombs: This was exactly my son at that age. He would say "I, I, I, I, I.." or "Do, do, do, do, do" before getting the rest of the sentence out. Totally a case of brain firing faster than the mouth! He did this for maybe 6 months? I would gently tell him to think about what he wanted to say, and then it would come out just fine.

i think it's fairly common! when LO1 did this, i would just wait patiently for him to get the words out. it lasted a month or so.

This happened to my LO too. Still happens on occasion at 5, and I'm not too worried.

My DD went through this. It was so hard to be patient and not fill in the words but I tried to just sit and listen and asked family members to do the same. The phase disappeared as quickly as it came.

thanks all! yeah i figure its a phase, but it came on so quick and so pronounced it worried me,... almost overnight it started!

It's definitely a phase. Our 3.5 year old was an early talker (sentences at 18 months). He never freaking stops talking. Right around 3 he started stuttering. At the time he was in speech therapy (for eating sensitivities) and I asked his therapist about it. She assured me it's a normal thing. They're thinking faster than their mouths can move.
Now at 3.5 it's mostly stopped, but when he gets really excited and talking fast, it still sometimes happens.

My 2.5 year old is doing the same thing. It's pretty bad, at times he gets stuck. I'm not to worried though, everything I read says it's a phase.
