Hello - I don't post on here much but I figure I could use some advice. My 5 month old started daycare the first week of January (4 months then) and it took all of 5 days before she got sick. It started out as just a nose issue but quickly turned into a bad cough as well. We took her to the doctor because we didn't like how the cough sounded and they told us she had bronchiolitis.
We did all the normal remedies...bulb, saline, humidifier but after a week of that, her cough only got stronger so after a really horrible night of no sleep and standing in our steamed filled bathroom, I took her back to the dr to make sure it didn't become something worse. Nope, still bronchiolitis. They didn't give her anything, even though I heard in some cases babies can get those nebulizers. They told us to keep doing what we were doing and it should just go away on its own - in a week or two is what they said.
Well here we are, 6 weeks later and this cough/cold is still around! It's definitely not as severe as it was, but she'll wake up with coughing fits at least 2-3 times a night and her nose is always either clogged or runny. Every day is the same routine (with the bulb, saline and humidifier) so while we've become quite the experts with dealing with this, it's starting to get really annoying! I feel so bad for her because I think she's so used to it that she probably doesn't remember what it's like to not feel sick like this. A friend of mine was holding her the other day and she said it felt like her back/chest was crackling when she breathed. I know babies who go to daycare tend to get sick frequently but I didn't think that meant she would be sick non-stop- I thought we'd at least get some breaks in between. If it were just her nose, I think I'd accept it more, but I just wish this cough would go away!! I did call the dr again just to see if the longevity of this was something to be worried about but the nurses there kind of blew me off like I was some crazed first time mom who calls when my baby even makes the slightest noise. So maybe you all can ease my mind...is it normal for this to be going on so long? Is my LO ever gonna get a break from this or should I just expect her to be sick nonstop for her first year of daycare?
Thanks for your help in advance! I swear I'm not usually such a worry wart but I just hate that hearing her coughing-fits at 3AM is our new norm!
