Heard about this series on the radio a few weeks ago... people were calling it "mommy porn."
It's the ongoing relationship between a wealthy man and a college co-ed...
Has anyone read it? What did you think of it? I'm kind of tempted to read it because I need a new series/reading addiction!

I had a friend just delete it after a few chapters because she said it was way too graphic. I probably won't read it. I don't really get the appeal of overly graphic detail. I know it's probably important to this specific storyline but that means I probably won't like the story.

I downloaded it after hearing it was originally based on Bella & Edward from Twilight however I stopped reading after a couPle chapters, it is definitely graphic and involves S&M.

So I'm almost done with the first book. It's not literary writing genius, but as far a steamy, trashy romance-ish novel, I give it a thumbs up!

My friend got a copy for her bachelorette party this past weekend. I opened it up to a random page and just started cracking up because it was so ridiculous! so over the top, and the writing is pretty painful to read.

I tried reading it, but just couldn't get into it. Christian creeped me out and Ana just annoyed me. I don't think of myself of much of a prude, but it was just a bit too graphic for me.

I can't decide if I want to try reading this or not. I don't know that I'd like something that graphic but I've heard so many people talking about it that I'm curious!

@PBandBaseball: I felt the same way and just downloaded it when I was on a book dling spree the other night. I picked it up to read before falling asleep. The writing is horrible, and the scenes can be very graphic (there's sex every two pages, I kid you not)... the characters are annoying, and the whole concept is just bizarre; but I still managed to get 90% through the book in the last few days.

@mrsjyw: I think I'm just going to go ahead and download it. If I hate it then I'll just get rid of it but I think the curiosity is winning! Do you think that you'll read the other books in the series?

I've read the first book, Fifty Shades of Grey, and started reading the second, Fifty Shades Darker, but haven't gotten very far. As @twodoghouse stated, the characters annoyed me, but Bella and Edward annoyed me in the Twilight books too and a lot of people like those.
If you're on the fence, you can find the original fanfic that this was based on on the internet. It's called "Master of the Universe." The fanfic has two parts - the first two books are in the first part of the fanfic and the second book is in the second part. Obviously the published version has gone through some edits and all the names have changed, but the basics are all the same.

@Adira: Ok somehow I missed that this was originally based on Bella & Edward. I'm not a fan of Twilight either, so maybe that's why I wasn't feeling this one either.

@twodoghouse: haha, no worries. A LOT of people didn't realize it. I don't really think it's common knowledge, but a review on goodreads pointed me in the right direction and I was able to find the fanfic online so that's actually the version I've read. I'm not a huge Twilight fan, but I figured I'd give it a try, but the characters annoy me just as much as they did in Twilight, haha.

I read them and enjoyed them despite the lackluster writing, but I'm not above liking a good trashy novel. They are pretty graphic and somewhat demeaning, but I knew that going in.

Never heard of it til HB and I just heard it again on TV. If I'm able to sample it on my kindle, I might read the first chapter to see if I like it.

So I am about a third of the way through the first book right now.... and here is what I have to say so far:
1. This is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read.
2. I definitely see Twilight all over it. I probably pick up on it because I knew it started out as "fanfic" but so many things are homages to Twilight. As a fan of Twilight though I enjoy it.
3. Despite being a really poorly written book, I understand completely what all the fuss is about, and can't put it down. *fanning myself* Whoo wee!

I've heard that it was great, but pretty racy. I might add it to my reading list, but only if I come across it at the library or something...I don't think I'll spend my Kindle $ on it.

I just finished the 2nd one. I will admit, it's not the best writing - but once you get into the second book and start learning more about Christian's life, it's fascinating! But, I might just be intrigued as a therapist, lol. It's definitely raunchy erotic reading - which I'll admit to loving

@MsMamaBear: I didn't know it had anything to do with Twilight until after being almost done with the 2nd, and the only thing that made me think twilight at all was that it takes place in seattle, and she goes to visit her mom in georgia. I swear, that's all I thought of!

Ana & Christian are written to look like Bella & Edward... her friend "Jose" is just like Jacob... she bites her lip all the time... Christian says he wishes he could read Ana's mind... Ana is clumsy and Christian is always there to save her... it goes on and on!

@daniellemybelle: hahaha, yeah, I guess you're right. I mean, I read the fanfic version where their names of even Bella and Christian, but those similarities didn't really bother me. The story itself is so different that I didn't notice a lot of those things you're mentioning.

My sister just gave me the ebook for it. I want to see what all the talk is about. Although, i'm a little concerned that they compare it to the Twilight books. I'm not a fan of those books.

Although, I've read my fair share of romance books and some of the writing is really bad.
I have started and just finished 50 shades of gray and I really like it. I'm comparing the book to other romance novels so the writing is pretty good. Then again, I'm definitely not a writer so I know I can't critique books. Haha.
The book is good enough that I want to keep reading it. I'm now on the 2nd book!
