So Xander's latest thing is to slap my chest while nursing. It's not hard or anything and it doesn't hurt, but while he's eating, he just keeps slapping my chest repeatedly. I guess to make the clapping sound? I don't really know what he's doing. I find it kind of funny, but should I discourage this?? Or just let him keep doing it since it's not bothering me?? And if I SHOULD stop it, how should I go about it? Restrain his hand and say "No slapping?"

Yup. M did this for a while. Do you have a lovey you could present to him or a blanket? Push his hand into it or cover your chest with it and maybe it will help guide him to use the lovey? I don't know, she stopped on her own but started picking at her belly button and I regret that she does that now.

DD does this ALL the time. It could just be distraction or it could be that he's trying to signal another letdown. I've not really found any way to stop it (but I haven't really tried).

R does this too. Or she grabs my face and slaps it over and over again. I just tell her no and hold her hand down for a minute and she usually stops. But then starts again. I wonder if she gets bored eating, so it is her playing?

@Smurfette: Oh, haha, the face! Yes, Xander will reach around until he finds my face and then grab my chin or pinch my lips! What are these babies doing??
But I'm relieved to hear that other babies do this! I can definitely try giving him his blanket and see if he'll play with that instead of smacking me around!

My LO does this too. Don't know what it means but I never tried to stop it since it doesn't bother me. The only thing I stop is when she BITES during nursing. Ouch.

@dolphin: OMG, I JUST got bit for the first time the other day and it HURT!!!!! I'm hoping that it doesn't happen again... But I agree - the slapping isn't all that bad, especially compared to biting!

@Mrsbells: OMG, Xander used to try to find my OTHER nipple when he was nursing and SQUEEZE/PINCH it!!!! I now have to keep it covered so he can't do that anymore!

K does this too, but more often it's kind of punching me or grabbing my nose or pinching my lips. I've brought out the chew beads/nursing necklace and lovey again and they seem to be a lot more useful now! I would try to discourage it without making it a big deal, because then they think it's a game!

@Adira: LO does this plus smacks me around...he's bit me a couple of times and i'll yell "ouch" which will startle him so he'll stop and look up at me, smile and then go back to business...

Yes! Liam does this too and sometimes I think it's a little funny. I figure it's a phase he's passing though. For awhile he was hitting his head and I was thinking "oh no... what's wrong with him?!" but now at least he's just hitting me and not himself as much. I just figure it's part of them getting used to using their arms/hands in new ways.

L does this too. I was wondering just yesterday if all babies are this active when nursing. He slaps, kicks, scrunches himself up, Stretches out, tries to turn over, finds my other nipple to pinch, pulls off to look at me, my nipple, the dog, a light... Anything! It's like milk makes him hyper!

@travellingbee: hahaha, Xander's like that too!! He's so distracted while eating! And he's constantly pulling off to look behind him! There's nothing going on back there, man! FOCUS! Babies are so dumb.
