My son is 9.5 months old and has been pretty spot on for all milestones so far. But he still can't wave or clap. I help him practice all the time and he smiles and thinks it's great, but doesn't do it on his own.
Is he late on this milestone? When did your LO wave/clap?

My LO was 11 months when she started to wave and clap somewhat consistently. I don't think T is behind at all!

P still doesn't wave or clap. She'll be 11 months in about a week. She's been a bit behind on most social milestones though so I'm not really all that worried about it, I know in the grand scheme of things she'll likely catch up with her peers around preschool age.

At 9.5 months my LO would clap with his hands fisted and it was pretty irregular. He also didn't start clapping and waving regularly until 11 months.

B started waving and clapping a week ago, he's 9 months. Does T hit two toys together? B started doing that a lot before he figured out clapping. I don't think T is behind..
Clapping I think is my favorite milestone behind smiling. I was singing an amazing rendition of "Wheels on the Bus" (with the hand motions) and B awarded me when I was done with clapping. First time anyone has actually enjoyed my singing.

@winniebee: I could have typed nearly the same thread. My LO will kind of sort of wave, but really he is just shaking his rattle, and he is not even remotely interested in clapping. So many of his pals who are younger are definitely clapping, but I just remind myself, all in due time....

@Mrs. Confetti: We call him penguin, b/c he flaps his arms when he gets excited....and I think waves inadvertently!

@winniebee: My LO was exactly the same way. He was about 11 months or so when he finally started to do it and I nearly cried. He has been spot on with all other milestones, even ahead on some.

My 10 month old has been clapping for a while, but doesn't wave. We've been trying to get him to do it, but he just stares at us like we're insane. I'm sure your babe is perfectly normal.

I think my LO was a little later, but wasn't your LO also born early? I believe sometimes that is the cause for delayed milestones.

I think she was over 10 months when this started. I try not to kill myself keeping track of these things because I'll just lose my mind over it.

my LO is ten months, she does clap a lot she started around 8 months but she doesn't wave. She does a fake wave like is doing the sign for milk but with her hand stretched out but not a real wave but I;m not too worried.

Try not to worry! Cobi waved for the first time a few days ago!!! I didn't worry because I know that he's capable of waving... he just never seemed to want to.
He started clapping between 10-11 months I think.

Don't worry! S is a few weeks older than T, and he *just* started clapping last week, still no waving, but he (irregularly) started doing the "so big, so tall" motions with us at about the same time. He had been ahead on other social milestones until the clapping/waving one, so it really bugged me.

G is 9 months old and I think she's clapped once. So I wouldn't say she's really consistent about it at all. As for waving? She's never done that one.

@Boogs: Only 10 days early. Supposedly it only matters for preemies, though, now that I think about it, he started smiling a little late, maybe at 8 weeks whereas I feel like most babies I know were smiling around 6 weeks.

My LO was late with that too. She thought it was soooo fun when we clapped for her but she didn't want to do it herself. Just a couple weeks later and she was clapping too. They like to do it on their own time

My oldest didn't wave until way past his first birthday. It took him so long I can't even remember when he first started waving. My youngest is clapping and waving since 8.5 months (he's 11 now). Don't worry! He'll hit this milestone before you know it.

@Mrsbells: i call it the heil hitler wave, which is what LO does too. 
LO started clapping around 8 months, and did it on command at around 9 months. But it isn't always consistent. She started waving around 9.5 months. I don't think most babies wave until 10-12 months anyway.

My LO didn't consistently clap until 11 months and knowingly wave until 12 months.

Our first waved and clapped at around 8 months and our second did both at 11 months. This is not considered a true milestone an not something I'd ever say a child was "behind" on.

Waving was just before 13 months, clapping was just before a year for us. He just clapped on his own today at the baseball game with the rest of the crowd and no prompting from us (14 months on Thursday).
