My husband and I put an offer in on our first home and it was accepted. It is a small older home with 3 bed and 1.5 bath. It is a flip and the contractor made a tiny laundry room in front of the half bath. Since it is so tiny you can only fit stacking laundry in there. I hate stacked laundry and I especially hate front loaders. I know, first world problems. So.... we are debating moving the laundry down to the basement (partially finished and looks pretty nice) so I can get some giant top loaders. In the long term we would put a shower where the original laundry is but use as storage in the meantime. I think 2 full baths would help if we ever needed to sell it in the future. While my husband is willing to move it he also thinks I'm being a little extra and thinks the current set up will be fine. What do you think?

Did it come with machines? If so I would live with it for 6 months before making any decisions just to be sure of what you want to do. However if you need to buy machines I would buy what you want and use the basement.

I would move it now IF you plan on having overnight guests that would need to shower. Otherwise, I would wait a year and see how you like the convenience of laundry on the same floor as your bedrooms.

@gotkimchi- does not come with machines. I'd probably live with it if it already came with them.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime- My family lives out of state and they are my number one reason for wanting two full bath. The current laundry is on the first floor.

@oldschooolmama: yep, make the change now. Not being extra at all. You’re going to have spend money no matter what might as well get the W/D you actually want and make the house function better for how it will be used.

Oh I voted keep it before realizing you would have to buy new machines. There is no hook up in the basement, only first floor? Do they have to be small stacking machines? In our old condo we had a laundry closet that was a bit too narrow for normal size stacking ones and when we replaced we had to pay more for a smaller machine which was super annoying (because it was a special size). And while I don’t mind the stacking or the front loader, the tiny machine was so annoying, I could wash like 3 full size towels.
If you really hate front loaders I guess that makes sense to move them.

I also voted keep before realizing you’d have to buy the machines. Don’t buy machines you hate! Move it now, everything is so much harder once you’re moved in.

I'd move it now as well. I like front loaders, but I'm short so having stacked machines is an annoyance to me! We also converted our 1.5 bath to 2 full baths when we bought our house.

I voted keep it before reading you don't have the machines already.I would go ahead and make the move. I think a second full bath is a good investment.

Since you have to buy new machines either way, I would buy what you want and put them in the basement.

I prefer laundry in basement or 2nd floor. First floor laundry results in a mess in the public area of the house

We have laundry in our finished basement and I like it a lot. I am not a fan of laundry in bathrooms. It’s too much to have to keep it tidy.

@oldschooolmama: aside from when they need repair stacked washer and dryer are not that bad and are perfect for small spaces like what you describe. Why do you hate it?

I only like our laundry in the basement b/c we have a laundry chute. Would you be able to put one of those in? It makes so much of a difference. Otherwise, I would also not like the stacked w/d in a bathroom. I did have that when I lived in my condo but it wasn't bad b/c it was only me. I can't imagine that now with all the laundry we have.

@Mrsbells- Front loader washing machines are known for mold issues and I just don't need another thing to clean/ deal with.
@Mommy Finger- We don't have one but that would be neat.

So it really depends on a few factors for me.
1. Are there hookups in the basement?
2. Do you already have machines that you could move with you, or are you buying either way?
3. How long until you could realistically convert the bathroom?If there are no hookups in the basement, then I would likely just use the current laundry space until I was ready to do the full bathroom/add hook-ups renovation. They definitely do make top loader stacked machines, so that wouldn't be the deal breaker for me.

I’ve had my washer and dryer in the basement in one house and on the main floor in our current house and I actually much prefer the main floor, so I would keep it there! It’s so easy to flip the laundry while we’re watching TV etc and I never forget about it.

For the number of times a year we have overnight guests, I would keep the laundry on the main floor and build a full bath to go with a guest room in the basement.
