I'm looking through some due date threads and first birthday party threads and feeling a bit guilty...my son turns one in march and we are planning an adult party - like wine and cheese, between naptime and bedtime (with a BBQ dinner planned for after my son goes to bed)...I'm making him a cake and we'll probably have balloons and stuff, and kids are definitely invited, but I guess I'm making the party more about us than him! Did anyone go this route with first birthday? I mean, as he gets older and is more aware we will definitely have more parties geared towards him, but for now I guess I don't see the point? Any other selfish moms out there use the first birthday as an excuse to have friends over??

We had friends and family over but it started at around 2 as a barbecue. Everyone could stay as long as they wanted. We did have a water slide for the kids. It was a family party, I guess.

Not selfish, it is more about you! Your first year of parenthood survived. I don't think there's anything wrong with the party you described.

That's perfectly fine. My inlaw's throw amazing parties that involve karaoke, BBQ, wine, beer, shots and lots of cake, food, and laughter! (Comparible to a small scale block party!) A good time for everyone, both kids and adults. We just can't do it on the same level because our condo is so small. We always have it at a kid friendly place since most of our friends' kids are so much older. They enjoy the kid entertainment.

We are sort of doing this, but many of our friends have older children. Our invitation says that doors open at 2, there will be children's entertainment at 2:30, and cake at 3:30. People are welcome to skip the children's entertainment and show up for cake. If anyone is still around by 5 then we will order pizza and keep hanging out.

@ScarletBegonia: We did this! His party was still about him, but it was mostly adults (only one other child) and we didn't plan any activities or kid stuff. We had burgers and beer and cupcakes

Your party sounds like fun. There isn't much to plan for 1 yo LOs anyway.
I did hear a friend grumble at my LOs party that I didn't have enough kid food but LO always ate adult food (minus allergens). I guess she expected chicken nuggets and mac & cheese. She's going to be disappointed this year too.

We had ours at a wine bar, it was fun!! Only had a few other kids invited (think there were 4 other kids out of about 40 guests, one of whom was 7), so wasn't a problem. People drank more than we expected them to, lol!!

I'd say ours was more "adult" than kid! We had a few of his friends over, but we saw it as a great opportunity to get our friends together, introduce some of our pre-kid friends to our with-kid friends, and have iced tea, bellinis and finger sandwiches. Your party sounds like a lot of fun!

Ours is mainly adults. It's a sit down late lunch at a more upscale restaurant with 25 adults and 5 kids (nephews/nieces/God children). it's drf mainly for us to celebrate surviving the first year!

Nope, I think that an adult first birthday party is absolutely appropriate. I actually don't care for first birthday parties that are full of kids - I think they're really overwhelming for a baby who really doesn't care either way. For us, 2 was the year to start making it more about what she wanted.

we totally had an adult party for my Lo's 1st and 2nd birthdays. the kids had balloons, streamers and toys, and the adults had a feast, drinks and lots of desserts. I plan on keeping the same theme with all my future parties - I figure the kids can entertain themselves when they're in a big group, and I'll always have a minimum of at least 20 adults to feed (immediate family!)

That's what we are considering too! He's 1, as long as you snap a few photos of him eating cake and wearing a silly hat, he'll never know the difference. You may as well enjoy yourself- it's also your "You Gave Birth Day!"

A friend did this and I admit I thought it was super weird!!!
Then we got there and had a blast and thought it was the best idea ever!!!!

Party started at 6pm - Birthday boy was there and we swooned over him and had cake and then he went to bed at 7pm - then we stayed and had food and fabulous food!

Every 1st birthday I've been to has been mainly adults. Even if you make it more "kid" themed, it'll be mostly adult guests, and the birthday boy/girl won't really understand or appreciate the kid-oriented theme.

Dunno if it's my circle of friends or what, but all parties = alcohol. lol So there was definitely beer and liquor at DS's 1st birthday. We acted adults (bc we are); and it wasn't like everyone acted like they're 21 and got sloppy wasted. Instead of drinking ice tea, you had a beer or a mixed drink. Once in awhile, everyone toasted with a shot of something or had wine. No biggie. We had over 80 ppl and our party turned out aweseome! We also had 20 some odd kids so it wasn't all adults.

Thanks for all the input. I'm getting really excited for it! My son was born on Pi day (3/14) so we decided last night to make it a pie theme and make him a cream pie to smash! We also ordered the alcohol
