@matador84: Definitely take it all one step at a time! There will be plenty to buy - start making a list of the things you need. Our biggest challenge was not furnishing the whole place at once! Its also important to start having a general house savings fund for random expenses you have not been subject to as a renter. We have been lucky that nothing major has broken but between a garage door, new faucets and other misc stuff we easily have spent $1500 on not fun upgrades in the last 6 months!

I agree with @Mrs.Someone: live in it for a while before making any major changes...but start the minor ones right away to make it feel like it's yours! By all means, dive in a paint some rooms, hang things on the walls once furniture is set up, etc. Until you start doing that, it won't really feel like it's YOUR place.

Also, consider the maintenance things (besides a shovel!) that you'll need. Lawnmower (or lawn service) was the big one for us, as well as salt for the winter, a snowblower, etc.

Save money! Lots of little things pop up, even in a well kept or newer house. And a ladder was one purchase we didn't think of that was about $100. Just things like that pop up and money seems to fly out the window!!

And like @mrs d said, don't try to buy everything at once, make a list and prioritize what you will buy first!

Change your filters for the A/C (and heater) vents every three months. I'm the worst at remembering that---maybe a google alert? It makes everything run more efficiently and saves you $$.
