LO has had a cold the past day and a half or so and developed a fever of 104.1 today before motrin kicked in. With motrin, rest and a bath, it has stayed between 101-102, which my pediatrician said was fine. She is generally in good spirits (considering the cold), eating and drinking a little, nursing, etc.
Question # 1: should I wake her in the night to check temp if she is sleeping well? That 104 scared the crap outta me so I am leaning towards 'yes' even though there is a good chance she won't go back to sleep.
Question #2: any tricks to getting the motrin in her when she is refusing and spitting it out? We tried mixing it in different food and drinks but it was a no go. Ended up holding her down and it was awful and she still spit/puked up some.

I wouldn't wake her-she needs the sleep to fight off the bug she's got. As for getting the Motrin in her I'm not sure how to help since she refused it mixed with anything
we always put it in with a little milk and it goes right down. Fevers are so scary when they spike-I hope she recovers quickly!!!

I wouldn't wake her... if the fever spikes, she will wake up.Sleep is more important right now. I don't know what to tell you about the Motrin... what worked for us was simply giving him medicine in a spoon. He kicked and screamed and fought when we tried to use the syringe, but comes running to eat it off a spoon.

Oh poor baby! Do you have an ear thermometer so you wouldn't have to wake her? Or can you just feel her forehead and only wake her if it feels really high?

I wouldn't wake her, the sleep is important for fighting off the infection. I find that if I squeeze in the medicine little by little and let LO control the swallowing he takes it easier. During his bout of roseola we had to give him Motrin a few times a day for 4 days and fighting him was getting tedious for all partis involved. Hope she feels better soon!!

I wouldn't wake her. If she is sick enough to need your help, she'll wake up.
Does she / did she used to take a bottle? My LO has graduated from bottle feeding a long time ago but will still take medicine if I put it in a bottle nipple and let her suck on that. It's the only way I've been able to give her medicine. I hope your DD feels better!

I also wouldn't wake her.
Sometimes a different vessel works for us - feeding it out of a spoon instead of the syringe or the little medicine cup. Also, blowing in the face once it is in their mouth causes a reflexive swallow.

@lizzywiz: how old is she? When my LO was 22 months my pediatrician was ok with me giving my LO the tablets that are quick dissolve. You can cut them in half it my LO had no problems chewing it up in her mouth bc they dissolve so quick. Usually 1 or 1.5 tablets was the dosage based on her weight. She spit out the liquid stuff but it was so easy to get her to take the tablets. Call your doc and ask. Hope she's better soon!

Awww my LO just got his first fever too.
You may want to buy a different flavor of Motrin next time? My LO spits out the berry but takes the grape.....the store brands have diff flavors. -

@lizzywiz: so... I am going to go against the grain. my LO (13m) had a high fever like that and our pedi recommended alternating the tylenol and ibruprofen.... if we didn't dose him at the 4 hour mark, he would wake up screaming and sweaty
So, it was worth it to nudge him, squirt it in, and pat his back to sleep because once he was up and in pain, it took a long time to calm him down. THE WORST. Day 3 it finally broke. Hope yours does soon!

I thought I should mention that following a cold, my son develops ear infections that begin with a fever.
The first time it happened, I had no idea what was going on and ended up dosing him with advil for 4 days before I brought him to the docs office. So, my advice would be if the fever is still there on day 2, go to your ped and ask them to check for an ear infection.

Hope she is feeling better. I usually would peek on her and check to make sure she wasn't crazy sweaty but if she was just warm, I let her sleep.

I wouldn't wake! If she is uncomfortable, she will let you know! I no stranger to the 104 fever, but our dr stresses it's the progression of the fever rather than the number that they really care about. We use Tylenol suppositories when we can't get the medicine down!

Rough night but I was calmer thanks to the Bee support network
She was fussy and awake most of the night so I re-dosed when she was at 103 again. Here's to hoping it passes today!@scg00387: I always appreciate the 'against the grain'
@looch: Oooh. Good to know- I will definitely keep an eye on it. Never occurred to me that it was anything other than the original cold.
@Sparkler: Tylenol suppositories? I'm intrigued. I had no idea there was such a thing! And even knowing how much she would hate it I am totally getting some because forcing the med orally is equally painful to watch and she chokes and gags which breaks my heart and makes me worry about aspiration.
