It is a tough request, but something to ask, you've got nothing to lose!

I work from home 1x a week (pre pregnancy) and in recent months have been working from home 2-3x a week for doc appts, etc. My boss has been really flexible because I worked my butt off for her the last year+ and also, she wants the pregnancy to be as smooth as possible for me; so the support has been really nice.

I plan on formerly asking for a second work from home day for after maternity leave in the next month or so; but with the fact that my mom would be our "nanny" and I will actually not be watching baby/working from home.

I am the same way. i was due in late april so i November/December i started asking questions about part-time and possible work from home(it wasn't set up or anything, but there were 'rumors' that it was coming). i just said i needed to know my options and 'do what's best for my family'. i know it sounds horrible, but i made it sound like i wouldn't be coming back if i couldn't work from home(and i'm not saying you should do that!). my work was very accomodating and i work from home 3 days a week and they let me keep DS home with me(most companies don't allow you to have your children at home with you, because working from home isn't a 'child care solution' <--that's what our contract said, but they let me do it no problems because i get my work done and then some...)

I would try working the 4 longer days approach first. My company won't allow you to telecommute unless you have child care in place while you are working. I've been telecommuting full time for almost 3 years now. When I first wanted to go out I put together a proposal/presentation for my boss that included what my work environment would be like at home, what the pros of me going home and how it could benefit the company and then I also made sure to address my solutions to any potential challenges I might have by not being in the office.
