Even though he likes email you are open to part time work. I would call first, flush out the PT idea. Depending on his response use your email as either a next steps for your return or a resignation/ thank you.

ETA: if you think email first is best go for it. If your boss really needs to read something before you meet, I would lay it all out.

In two weeks I am scheduled to return back to work. However, I would like to come back on a part time schedule. Explain if you will able to do the same tasks with a shorter schedule or set expectations how your productivity may change. Explain how many hours you would like to work in a week or even propose a schedule. Please let me know a day this week we can discuss this in person at the office.

I agree about not apologizing. Also, you may want to contact someone in HR to see how maternity pay may be affected. Congrats on figuring out what is best for your family, stay strong!

@travelingbrit: conversations w/the boss about stuff like that are always tough! But your only options are to suck it up and tell him or to fake your own death, move away and go totally off the grid (way easier said than done!)

If you can leave your baby at home when you meet with your boss in person I think that is a great way to show him you are still a viable (PT) employee.

Obvs you know your boss better but I thnk email would come off less professional than scheduling a meeting - especially if you're going to allay fears that you would be effective working from home. I'd come prepared knowing why you want and have a proposal ready detailing what your schedule could be, compensation, the works. It'll give him time to mull I thermally of he has stuff to read an not have to respond verbally immediately and would be a great starting point for discussion. I wouldn't apologize at all in any way- it's a personal decision not a mistake and sets a tone that you owe them something instead of presenting an alternative opportunity. Good luck!!

i might also say something about how much you've enjoyed working there and it was a really hard decision for you, but you've decided that it is what is best for your family. maybe that you would love to come back in the future full time when the time is right....i think employers like to hear about loyalty and that you've thought long and hard about it.

agree in person is probably better, but if email is your boss' preferred method of communication then that is fine too.

I think someone mentioned this, but you might want to talk to HR. I believe that if you took paid maternity leave, you must remain full time with the company for 6 months (at least, that's what it is in my case as a state employee) - otherwise the paid leave must all be repaid to the company.
