I would divide and conquer! Also, I know there's a weird rule about only one infant per row...(not sure what the age max is on that)

@mrsjyw: the rules apply for lap children and car seat placement (only one extra air mask per row and car seat can't obstruct another passenger from exiting the row).

I would do one child by window one adult in middle one child in aisle and other adult in aisle. I am always paranoid about bothering other passengers and this seems like the best setup for that. Plus with one of you in the middle it will cut down on the bickering.

@T-Mom: Divide and conquer only if both parents are equally good at entertaining LOs. I was recently on a trip with my then 3 month old. I was sweating bullets, worried my baby was going to be the screaming baby.

But I needn't have worried--my LO hardly made a peep and just ate and slept....but a family of 4 (3 year old and dad in front of me and mom and 5-7 year old a few rows behind) were annoying everyone on the plane.

The dad put headphones on and watched a movie on his computer and ignored the 3 year old, who screamed incessantly over a game he was playing on an Ipad..the entire, two hour flight. The 3 year old was also kicking the seat in front of him, and that guy turned around and started a whole altercation with the dad. Loud cursewords were involved.

The man sitting next to the Dad asked the flight attendants if there was another seat he could move to (there wasn't). =(

It was...awkward.

Option 2. It always worked out well for us as a family (we traveled a lot). Dad sat in the seat alone, mom got to sit between us (lucky her...)

@lawbee11: This is what I think, especially for a shorter flight. Otherwise, for a longer flight, I would divide-- but not front/back. Take the middle and aisle seats across from each other (ex: Row 17, seats B, C, D, E).

I like @lawbee11: 's set up. I think it would be nice to have a row all to yourselves so you could spread out all your stuff and not worry about "infringing" on anyone's space.
