at that age, is it a regression? we didn't do CIO until close to 6 months. E was still being swaddled at 4.5 months and we tried out the merlin magic sleepsuit, which was awesome. every time she moved, she woke herself up. I agree with @blackbird in looking into if it's a regression or wonder week. We never did CIO. We did what I consider a gentle sleep training technique. We would stay in the room with her while she fell asleep (sleepy but awake). Sometimes we would be in there for an hour, sometimes less than that. I would lay on the ground with my hand in her crib so she would know I was there and could grab it if she needed to. She was a little older when we did this. Before we did this, I just dealt with the wake-ups.

Co sleep. We all get sleep that way. Drowsy and awake doesn't exist in my house! DS1 has never done it and DS2 has done it a handful of times.

We did "pick up/put down" and not "cry it out" allowed fussing but not upset screaming/crying and stayed in the room with him. We got info from Happiest Baby/Toddler on the Block and the No Cry Sleep Solution.

Wait it out. That's what we did. It took almost two years to sttn but that's just our parenting style and I'm glad we did it that way.

I was never comfortable with CIO, but I think there is a big difference between fussing and crying. If my LO isfussing, I wait a bit before going in to see if he will settle. If it escalates into a full on cry, we go in and feed. Well, actually soothe now that he is over a year. I'm sure it doesn't work for every kid, but it worked well for us.
