I'd totally do this is we were able to make a Montessori style nursery! Hopefully for our next we can go this direction!

I would also keep it and store it.

We did this, we just took the crib apart and store it in our basement, but we have a lot of storage space. LO starts the night on her crib mattress on the floor next to our bed, and then comes to bed with us when we go to bed.

Is he really mobile yet? If not, you might consider waiting a little longer until you really see his personality while crawling and walking.

My kids haven't slept in a floor bed, but with their level of activity at 11 mo, I can't really imagine them having the self discipline (?) to stay on the mattress while putting themselves to sleep.

I don't think your crazy!! Does A stay on his crib mattress while he's down there? If he's used to it and he does well I think it's worth giving it a shot in the nursery! I'd personally keep the crib, just broken down, but I definitely understand not liking to store a bunch of random things.

@MrsKC; We also bed-shared for part of the night, so there was no roaming (though Lorelei, unlike Ellie, has gotten out of the bed and gone over to the door to 'get' me if I don't come right away). Typically they would sleep there alone for naps (Lorelei does her whole nap alone, but Ellie did part of her naps with me until she stopped napping at age 2.5 because otherwise she would wake after 20-30 minutes which was just not enough sleep for her), and then start off the night alone there until I came to bed, at which point I would go lay with them (Ellie) or take them to my bed (Lorelei). It has been my experience that once they are in a good sleep rhythm and seem to understand that nights are for sleeping, if they do wake up at all they really just want to get back to sleep. So at that point they would use nursing or some other soothing technique to get there. I do truly appreciate the acknowledgement of independence and autonomy that floor beds provide, as well as the safety. Ellie and Lorelei both see their beds as places they can go to feel comfortable, and it is so nice to see that they can access them all on their own.

@Mrs. Twine: We currently bed share and have since LO was born. He turned one at the end of May and a crib now seems silly ($500 flushed down the potty) How did you start the floor bed? Did you put it in your room first? Did you nurse them to sleep there? I need more info

@Junebugmama; With Ellie I converted my own bed into a floor bed. She slept in it with me in my room until she was 2.5 and Mr. T and I started living together. Then she had a floor bed in her own room where I would put her to sleep, and I would go lay with her in the night in there if she woke up. Lorelei started out sleeping in bed with Mr. T and I. At ten months when she started to nap less well (and was heavy!) being worn for naps, we started having her nap on the floor bed in her room. Around the same time we started having her sleep on the floor bed until we went to bed (prior to that I held her or wore her until bedtime).
I nursed both girls to sleep sitting in a chair and then moved onto the bed with them once they were down. Is he an "easy" sleeper? Lorelei sleeps well anywhere and everywhere, so we didn't need to do much transitioning. If your son is a little more wary of new things you might want to set it up in your room first, and keep the other parts of your routine the same. With both my girls, having nursing available was pretty much all that they needed to feel comfortable with that sort of difference from where they used to sleep.

My son ditched the crib on his own around 20 months of age, he just didn't want to sleep in there and decided he wanted to sleep in a bed instead. One night, after books, I said to him, okay G time to go to sleep and he got up and walked to the bed and let me know he wanted to go there.
We haven't looked back since.
