$40 more is ridiculous. I've been noticing that shipping isn't really 2 days anymore and they're using USPS most of the time now. I'd have a hard time paying more and getting less.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Gah I hope they don't raise it!!!
I feel like I would have no choice but to pay for the increase because I am so addicted to amazon I don't know what I would do without prime...
squash / 13208 posts
@spaniellove: Ditto - even though my order says 2 day shipping its NEVER 2 days anymore! More like 3-4 and yep it comes from USPS!
I wouldn't pay more!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
@spaniellove: I've noticed that, too. The last couple packages took three business days to arrive.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
I don't think I would. The biggest bonus we get from Amazon Prime is getting the packages in 2 days. And like @spaniellove said, sometimes things aren't even getting to us in 2 days. They just added tax to Amazon for NC so that's annoying. If it goes up to $40, we would have to seriously reconsider. Especially considering we'll be moving out of diapers in the next year or so (hopefully). Those and wipes are the only items we do subscribe and save on

Interesting I just read this in the comments of the link - wonder if this is true and why I never get things in 2 days anymore
"Amazon no longer guarantees delivery within two days to Prime customers. What they guarantee is delivery to a local postal facility within 2 days."
bananas / 9628 posts
that sucks. i wish they would break up some of the subscriptions- like amazon streaming, the free prime stuff i can watch doesn't interest me at all, and i don't use the kindle library, so i think having a leveled system would be great for customers. basic prime with 2 day shipping and discounts with S&S for $79, then the others could be $20 add ons. or make them 6 month subscriptions so it doesn't feel like such a big chunk of money all at once
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
@spaniellove: Seriously. I ordered something last Friday night and it's still not here. Delivery estimate was yesterday, which is still more than 2 day, and tracking says it's still several states away. And Amazon's response is just that "it's been delayed". Yeah, no shit Sherlock...
I dunno if I'd keep it, even at only a $20 increase. I think I'd have to take a hard look at how often/much I spend there, and if it's really worth the money for a year of free shipping, or if I could just combine more items into bigger orders and try to get free shipping that (the super shipper saver or whatever it's called).
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@spaniellove: same. The last three times I've ordered, it's taken up to a week to get my stuff. It has been delivered via UPS but a huge issue is that they require a signature and because we work, we're not here during the day.
I don't pay for prime now so I definitely wouldn't for $40+. I have shipping benefits because I'm a student but I don't have other prime benefits.
honeydew / 7916 posts
It wasn't a conscious decision, but I just realized that with the slower delivery and now paying sales tax (which I know is not their decision) I'm starting to go out and buy things that I used to order out of convenience. It was nice to get a good price and have it delivered quickly w/o leaving the home, but now if I know I'm going to save a few cents and not know how long I'll be waiting...I'll just find it locally. Obscure things I suppose I'll have to suck it up.

Ugh. If it goes up by that much, then definitely not. $20 dollars is even a big increase honestly....
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
Of course. It is still a great value for me since I shop so much. I also share it with 3 other family members so I can always have them chip in. $29.75 per family isn't that bad for a year
pomelo / 5628 posts
I wasn't planning to renew at the current rate. Basically prime is just paying for shipping. It would work if you bought a ton of stuff, but I don't think it's worked out for me.
coconut / 8854 posts
Most things that I buy on amazon are offered the free shipping with that $35 purchase anyways. To save money, I think I would be willing to wait a few extra days honestly.
honeydew / 7909 posts
I've never ever had a problem with not getting my packages within 2 days. But I don't think I'd pay 40 dollars more.
kiwi / 635 posts
Interesting - I always receive in 2 business days, and occasionally one. I'm in a major metropolitan area near an Amazon facility though, so maybe that helps. I can't imagine paying a nearly 50% increase in Prime costs...would probably start directing my business elsewhere.
GOLD / papaya / 10166 posts
I don't know - that's a pretty big price hike. I mean, we probably spend $79 in shipping alone during the holiday season, but the 2-day shipping has become unreliable. I"m not sure I'd pay the extra amount.
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrs. Pen: do you have the UPS app? i have it on my iphone & i get an email the night before they have a delivery with a 3 hour window of their estimated arrival time and then i can authorize a release for them to leave the pkg. it's a lifesaver for me when i know i'm not going to be there when they arrive. they leave the pkgs even though USPS refuses to even deliver pkgs to my building- they leave a note and require that i pick them up during their normal business hours, which was next to impossible when i worked full time.
persimmon / 1427 posts
I order a lot on amazon and everything arrives in 2 days EXCEPT subscribe and save. At one point I read the fine print and realized 2 day shipping does not apply to subscribe and save.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@mrs. bird: oh weird. I prefer USPS because they leave it with our landlord! UPS won't. I will look for the app - that'd be great if I could authorize them to leave the package. Could I ask them to leave it with our landlord? I wouldn't be okay with it outside our apartment door because there have been package thefts in our building (stole one of my packages, actually).

Ugh, that's a big increase. $40's quite a bit more. I hope that there's some uproar against it. I thought that Amazon was good at understanding their business model. This sounds like the Netflix streaming/dvd thing they did with a horrible response. Is Amazon getting too big for their britches?
I agree with others two day shipping is getting unreliable lately.
pomegranate / 3244 posts
I am cancelling anyways since my student pricing is about to expire ($39/year instead of $79 or whatever the normal price is). A $40 increase on top of that means it would absolutely be off the table, since I don't do that much amazon shopping anyways. I can just wait and buy things I need at once for the free standard shipping.
bananas / 9628 posts
@Mrs. Pen: you can do one time releases or just a general release for all of your pkgs. I only do one time releases. 40lbs of cat litter up 4 flights of stairs?? I want the guy to carry it up I think you can request where it's left, but I can't see right now since I don't have any shipped & undelivered items right this second. It's my choice UPS (I have basic, you could pay for premium & more features), you can prob do all of it online, I just find the app easy. We've had pkgs go missing, but now no one touches our stuff. I think they're all afraid of mr bird, lol.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
Yep! For the amount of ordering I do, the free shipping (and time saving!) makes it worth it for me.
pomelo / 5220 posts
eh for $40 I probably won't renew. They use this terrible shipping company called "Lasership" now and it is really horrible.
pomelo / 5220 posts
Um, the WORST customer service ever @spaniellove - you can't even get someone on the phone. My package showed up 2 weeks late...
honeydew / 7916 posts
@mrs. bird: My Choice is the best! I don't need the features anymore but I love getting notifications because I find out even when things get sent to me from someone else. And if I want to be home when things get delivered I'll know when that window is. Or I can reschedule a delivery.
@mrbee: Sorry I completely threadjacked this. In short, I guess for what I'm already paying I want fast, reliable, premium delivery services!
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
Yes, I would pay significantly more for Amazon Prime. I order seriously *everything* through Prime and max out my Subscribe & Save discount every month. Before I had kids, I probably would not have thought it was worth it, but now the thought of spending time on the weekend driving to Target, unloading DD from her carseat, shopping, and carrying everything into my house makes me cringe. I *love* having bulk items just show up on my doorstep.
I also live in a major metro area and always get things within 1-2 days, via UPS. I think it really depends where you live how the shipping works out, but it works very well for me.
Also, Amazon customer service is pretty great. Every time I have had an issue, the guys on email were GREAT and went above and beyond in fixing my problem. For example, my S&S order this month had a damaged item - it was so cold last week that one of the liquid items exploded in the box and damaged my entire order. They sent me a completely new order at no charge, with 1-day shipping.
honeydew / 7303 posts
I order a lot through amazon, but 40$ more seems extreme! I would try to shop locally more often.
pomelo / 5000 posts
So it will be $40 on top of the $79? That is steep! We have a family membership though and use it all the time, so we'll keep it.
bananas / 9118 posts
I already refuse to pay for Prime, so no, it wouldn't help their cause.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
I love Amazon and they have great customer service, but I am not interested inpaying a dollar more for Prime. I just don't think it is worth it. I would rather just plan ahead and order with Free Super Saver shipping. That stuff always arrives within the same timeframe as Prime stuff anyway!
persimmon / 1386 posts
We would definitely still pay. It would suck, but we use Prime for everything possible. We also get at least 5 things every month through the subscribe and save to get the 20% discount. It does suck that VA just started charging sales tax on Amazon purchases, but the convenience just can't be beat. We also never have an issue with getting things in 2 days, often times we get it in one.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
I'm honestly not sure. I'll obviously keep it (I think our renewal is in October?) until renewal time but I'm going to start watching for delivery dates. Even the whole 2 day thing is bogus. Ordered something this morning, the delivery date (WITH PRIME) is Tuesday. Saturday counts, guys. You deliver on Saturdays.
The ONLY reason I would maybe keep it is because I work from home. With LO, it's hard to get out as it is. It's not like I can go pick it up easily from work on my lunch break or way to/from work like I used to. But if it keeps being more than 2 days to deliver, I would be too annoyed to keep it, because then where's the benefit? Gah I'm such a homebody now...
